Just a thought, but I always had a feeling that elves might have arisen from the far off contact of Western Europe with Asia. Magic, nice clothes, closeness to nature, exotic foods and buildings, and the exotic looks of asians (well compared to your local Europeans). I'm sure it's not the true answer, but I seem to remember reading that the Europeans believed "fairyland" was in the East...no idea where I saw that or even if it is true.
I'd much rather meet Tolkein's elves...though they are tad stuck up.

With my name, it would be strange if I didn't believe in the little people.
A friend of the family used to work in an old pub and had a room in the building. Each night he would creep downstairs when the landlord was asleep and have a few glasses of whiskey. If the shortfall was noticed, he would have a laugh and blame the Cluricaun. Then one night when he came for his drink, he heard something in the cellar and thought the cat had got locked in. So he went down and switched on the light but there was nothing there. But when he went back upstairs, the door was closed and he couldn't open it. He was stuck there all night until the landlord woke in the morning and let him out
Maybe it was the Cluricaun getting his own back.
