Chicago Police To Use M4 Carbines

There is a bigger picture then just arming these police officers with an M4. In LA there are some 22,000 Mexican gangsters. These gangs are starting to expand to these kinds of places. The solution would have been to prevent them from coming into the country in such big numbers as illegals. These gangs will end up killing mass people in the middle class and then finally fight the police.

The police are being out gunned near New Mexico because these gangs carry automatic weapons and they move in large numbers.

All in all the people should start to panic a little bit. The government is arming it's police, army and private contractors, the gangs are growing bigger and bigger, meanwhile the middle class is going to be sandwiched in the end.

Start arming yourselves. Either legally or illegally.

Don't be fooled they are not brave at all. They won't do anything unless they're in high numbers. And it takes no bravery at all to drive down the street and shoot out of a car window, killing innocent children playing outside, actually most of them are quite the opposite of brave.

Enough with all that "sense making." You know the only problem is the one's we can see on the surface. We all know damn well it has nothing to do with child development and environmental/social pressures including a high unemployment rate, welfare, and lack of education. Instead of getting to the core of the issue, it's better to just swat the flies. I mean, what's 13,000 guns on the street? New books? Intensive education systems? Concern for the lower class?

If the government is reviewing it now, we should review it ourselves. It does no good to wait until after they get weapons to BEGIN talking about it. I agree that those rounds will penetrate through houses having used the weapon myself. In places where houses are made of solid clay or cement I can see these weapons being useful, but not in neighborhoods made of wood.

I saw concern in this thread in relation to the .223 ammunition being dangerous in the city. Personally I use frangible ammunition in my Home Defense version of the M4. Frangible ammo is good for self defense and will not penetrate a sheet rock wall. I would assume they use TAP ammo but if penetration is a concern the frangible is very deadly but not dangerous after encountering walls, floors, etc.

I really don't see a problem. It's not going to be the be all end all replacement for sidearms. It would be Stupid and FAR too costly.

Most cars in my local department carry Shotguns, with enough for nearly every officer in the station. Also carry one or two rifles for long range. They rarely have to jump up to bigger sizes, but the few times they have, it's saved lives.

But maybe it's because I'm in the country, and people out here who want to cause trouble tend to use shotguns or rifles, whereas street punks only use handguns.

I know it's a little late as this story is from monts ago, but i can walk down the street and buy an m4 for like a grand, it's not a big deal.

This has very little to do with the actual caliber of weaponry used by gangs on the streets right now, as many posters have pointed out. I too, live in Chicago. What this whole bull# is about is Chicago is trying to prep for the next Olympics and make themselves attractive to the Olympic Committee. They want to create a paramilitary zone in the poorer sections of the city to keep the 'rabble' under control. We saw this in Beijing with the razing of the slums. The bureaucracy of Chicago wants to do the same here.

I dont know if this sheds any light on the situation and its my style to cause an argument but an M-4 is sold in many variants, Most small town police departments have a few, The state police here in NJ carry Colt Carbines. This is not a weapon that you just give to a patrolman or trooper and say here secure this in your vehicle. Im sure the Chicago PD will have many hours of instruction on this weapon system from breaking it down and cleaning to hours of active shooting before they can employ them in an actual situation and then if its a crisis situation the well trained SWAT team will be on scene and most SWAT guys have some sort of advanced training before they even get selected for SWAT, I think its a good show of force and maybe the criminal minds and gangs will think a little clearly before acting noe that the Pd will be on the same level as them.

Case and point..Look at how outgunned the LAPD was during that bank robbery. They had to borrow high powered rifles from a gun store, Thats crazy. A member posted about MP-5's..Its a real nice weapon, Its very expensive, has a few variants to choose from and calibers but is really only good for in tight close quarter battles where its deadly but you lose accuracy as a long range weapon.

Chicago Police should have had better weapons before now. They seems to always be the last to be upgraded for handling the crime on the street level. The M-4's are just a start, hopfully they will come up to date along with other Law agencies with in there own state as well as out.

To some. Patrol officers carrying rifles in their car almost seems they're being to careful. As if being too careful is like using a molotov against a prairie dog. And therefore we are living in a police state.

Somebody mentioned in this thread the bank robbery shoot-out in LA where police were outgunned. That's a good example of why police departments are procuring rifles to their patrol officers.

First of all are you absolutely 100% sure that the rifles ARE fully automatic M4 rifles? Because in most cases the rifles are semi-auto AR15s which are variants of the M4. Now an officer may possess a fully-automatic rifle if they are qualified to use it (ie: SWAT operator). But this is a rare instance. And it all depends on departmental policy.
