CHICAGO — Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis has plans to equip the department's officers with M4 carbines to match the firepower of the street gangs they have to face to stop the wave of shootings in the city.
Weis' decision to arm and train his 13,500 officers with more powerful weapons was disclosed Friday.
Chicago Police SWAT teams are already equipped with M4 carbines, but rank-and-file officers are currently only allowed to carry handguns.
The M4 is a short assault rifle used by the Marine Corps, and it fires more shots in less time than most handguns. The fully automatic version can fire up to 1,000 rounds a minute, although the magazines only hold from 20 to 30 shots.

Maybe the solution lies with improving the life of the inner city kids who find gangs as an outlet because they arent provided the same opportunities as others.

Now we have 13,500 Chicago Police officers toting M4 Carbine rifles. Under the excuse they are outgunned by the gangs.
Well now the police get better weapons, the gangs get better weapons.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- In a show of force from Chicago Police officers have hit the streets on a particularly violent weekend.
At least six people have been shot to death and more than two dozen others wounded in shootings since Friday afternoon in Chicago.
At one point, 18 shootings had occurred in 17 hours. It was just one snapshot in time, and a police spokesperson says it's not indicative of an uptick in crime
Prosecutors have charged 39-year-old Bennie Teague of Chicago for the murder of Marcus Hendricks and with attempted murder for allegedly shooting at police. Police took the suspect into custody Saturday, but not before the man allegedly opened fire on police, unloading 17 shots from an AK-47.

I hope you all noticed that the weapon used was an AK-47.
Maybe before having a knee jerk reaction you should do a little checking and see just what is actually happening.
The city's police officers carry pistols, and Daley suggested they will start carrying "M4 rifles."
Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the department still is working out details about the M4 carbines.
"It's very preliminary. It's really under review. It is something being reviewed. As far as all of the logistics, the training component, might be premature to discuss it at this point," Bond said.
Daley pointed out that the Illinois State Police, Chicago SWAT units and other police departments around the country already carry high-powered assault weapons. He said the weapons will better match the Chicago police officers against criminals with sophisticated weapons, such as high-powered assault rifles.
"We're finding out that the weapons of criminals are getting bigger and bigger, AK47s, all types of different weapons, because they can carry assault weapons, it's not a violation of federal law, and that is a concern for all of us," he said.
