"Off the Map" Vacation Destinations. Anyone?

I need a vacation. I'm looking to go somewhere fun. Ideally one of those 'best kept' secret' type of places with few to no tourists...you know like in the movie 'The Beach'? Only a bit less dangerous. My budget is less than 5 g's. I heard you can live in Costa Rica or Puerto Rico really cheap for a year! Anyone have any suggestions?
