Abu Ghraib Whistleblower Samuel Provance Speaks Out on Torture and Cover-Up

www.democracynow.org

In a national TV broadcast exclusive, we spend the hour with Abu Ghraib whistleblower and former Army sergeant, Samuel Provance. From September 2003 to the spring of 2004, Provance ran the top-secret computer network used by Military Intelligence at Abu Ghraib. He was the first intelligence specialist to speak openly about abuse at the prison and is the only Military Intelligence soldier listed as a witness in the Taguba report. Among the abuses he lists is the torture of a sixteen-year-old Iraq

People hammer the USA and say we are terrible, but what people don't realize is the someone like this can come out and tell his story.

Now if this was Russia, China, Korea, Iran, etc......and an officer or citizen spoke out he/she would be dead, disappear, in jail for life, tortured.

Even though the US may seem screwed up right now, we still live in one of the best countries in the world. Our current administration, both party ethics and morals need re-evaluation but the core of the US population are good people.

At one time I would have agreed with you RT. No More. This invasion of Iraq, based on lies, trumped up information perpetrated by corporate interest has gone on so long without any real protests; that the American populace is either asleep, dumbed down or so apathetic that It has no soul or moral compass.

While I agree in principle, I think you sound a bit naive to think that 'outspoken' whistle blowers have not been killed, 'disappeared', jailed for life, or tortured right here in the good ol' USA. Maybe I'm just cynical, but I suspect we have such things going on wherever there are those who's well being is considered more important than those of others. It's part and parcel with elitism and oligarchy.

We are trying to be good people, that's the heart breaker for me, we do try - yet most of the rest of the world see us as those self-deluded jack-asses and sluts Hollywood types like to use for 'our' entertainment.

Whaa I agree with you in part, but think about it on the grander scale. Most people in the USA weren't for war with Iraq, Afgan yes but Iraq no.

If you put it to a majority vote with the people of the USA 3 or 4 years ago, and not Congress, the Iraq war and the troops would be home now.

American people know they are being BS'd, but the majority are just trying to pay bills, feed their families and just get by. Basically they are mortgaged to the hilt, owe on credit cards, auto, insurance, utility bills, taxes, and in there some where they trying to get some sleep and maybe on a holiday see their family.

The US is set up much different from Europe I have lived in both countries. Europe everything is very close and can be commuted to by train or public transit, in the USA most of the country has no public transit and people need to have a vehicle to drive a long way, just to make a living.

I also agree with you that many people are asleep, but it's by lifestyle and it's all most in the USA know. How do people wake up? Well they need to see other cultures, ways of living, but how do you do this when you are in a rat race and up to your a$$ in debt?

This will end, most in the USA are sick of their choices for politicians.

The USA majority, like I said, still has moral and ethics. You will see them stand up very soon against the oppressors and this time it will not be a bloody battle but battle of intellect/wit.
