Two men in Hawaii have launched a lawsuit against the European Center for Nuclear Research, or CERN, citing what they believe is an experiment which carries unacceptable risk to our planet. Specifically, the planet may be sucked into a black hole.

The world's physicists have spent 14 years and $8 billion building the Large Hadron Collider, in which the colliding protons will recreate energies and conditions last seen a trillionth of a second after the Big Bang. Researchers will sift the debris from these primordial recreations for clues to the nature of mass and new forces and symmetries of nature.

But Walter Wagner and Luis Sancho contend that scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research, or CERN, have played down the chances that the collider could produce, among other horrors, a tiny black hole, which, they say, could eat the Earth. Or it could spit out something called a "strangelet" that would convert our planet to a shrunken dense dead lump of something called "strange matter." Their suit also says CERN has failed to provide an environmental impact statement as required under the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act

Considering our chances to get wiped out by a meteor or a dozen other scenarios, I think it is important that we advance our cosmic knowledge and our capacity for Space Travel as fast as possible.

I do see some reason to be concerned. CERN’s web site states that we have not been destroyed by effects of cosmic rays and micro black holes will evaporate. However, cosmic rays travel too fast to be captured by Earths gravity, and Hawking Radiation is disputed and contradicts Einstein’s highly successful relativity theory. Collider particles smash head on like a car collision and can be captured by Earth’s gravity, and relativity predicts micro black holes will not decay (Hawking called Einstein doubly wrong, yet it is Einstein who is repeatedly found to have been correct in his theories). There is currently no reasonable proof of LHC safety, LSAG (LHC Safety Assessment Group) has been trying for months to prove safety without success. I hold the minority opinion that it may not be possible because it may in fact not be safe.

I found the affidavit.
Luis Santos vs. US Department of Energy et al,

according to the complaint....

......any such novel particle created in nature by cosmic ray impacts would be left with a velocity at nearly the speed of light, relative to earth. At such speeds, …, is believed by most theorists to simply pass harmlessly through our planet with nary an impact, safely exiting on the other side. … Conversely, any such novel particle that might be created at the LHC would be at slow speed relative to earth, a goodly percentage would then be captured by earth’s gravity, and could possibly grow larger [accrete matter] with disastrous consequences of the earth turning into a large black hole.

So my point is if this thing is so safe, why aren't CERN scientists allowed to express any fears they might have about this collider?

Alleged in the legal action:

Chief Scientific Officer, Mr. Engelen passed an internal memorandum to workers at CERN, asking them, regardless of personal opinion, to affirm in all interviews that there were no risks involved in the experiments, changing the previous assertion of ‘minimal risk’.

Statisticians generally consider minimal risk as 1-10%.

How do you like them odds?

this was allready introduced here.. and shown as what it is: a totally uninformed concern only sustainable via missinterpretation and false understanding of the subject and the scales involved

Their suit also says CERN has failed to provide an environmental impact statement as required under the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act

and this gets an extra lol for free, why should an european society confine them selfs to the laws of some strange country on the other side of the globe?

and if you are to lazy to read the whole other thread here some arguments on the matter:

However, cosmic rays travel too fast to be captured by Earths gravity

they dont have to get captured by earths gravity since they allready hit earth (and mostly interact with the upper atmosphere) but since they in no way concern the experiment:
why talk about them here?

and Hawking Radiation is disputed and contradicts Einstein’s highly successful relativity theory

it doesn't... it is directly obtained from it, einstein never put a dogma on the energy tensor, so there are still things to discover which can be in there... and that (by quantum theory) negative local energy densities can occur is allready shown by experiments for some decades, pair production by gammarays is also studied for a longe time so there is no starting point for thinking there arent going to be any hawkingradiation at black hole event horizons

maybe you just got the fundations of science wrong
... science can in no way prove something in nature (only in totally constructed sciences like math or philosophy) it just predicts things as more reasonable/propable
if you apply science results (which in no way can be more then theorys or axioms) to the world, there is allways the propability to disprove a theory.. since this happens almost never, we get used to science as a real world fakt and in conclusion with this some of us get obscure about scientific results not experiencable in every day life such as high energy physics or generell relativity

this apperance out of your own senses and comprehension, doesn't mean it is some kind of magic or total dangerous world killing stuff
if someone puts an egg into a pott of boiling water nobody expects him to proof that this is save for the whole mankind.. than why do you ask it from the hundrets of lhc people doing this stuff for almost their whole lifes/careers?

if they know what they do and you dont than the responsibility to get informed is not on their shoulders but on yours, read, understand the physics, ask if you encounter questions and then think again on the lhc destroying our earth
