The effect that humans might have on global warming is so insignificant that it won’t make much of a difference what you do, especially if you’re just switching off for an hour. Global warming is Natural, it will continue to happen no matter what you do, that’s the natural cycle.

The whole “let’s go green” and “lets stop global warming buy turning off our lights and reducing our carbon footprint” is all a big con, which unfortunately people just keep falling for. People will believe anything that the msm tells them, just look at the Y2K bug, what a con that was!

It’s all about money making, “buy this light bulb and save the planet” etc etc.

8 PM huh? That would be difficult as it would inconvenience me. I will miss star trek for one hour...what a shame...jk. Sounds like a worthwhile experiment. One hour is hardly an inconvenience and anyone who actually believes my above statement to be truth for them is a sad human. I will participate. It is getting too hot in texas and we don't need anymore heat. Kudos to this experiment.

The most this "event" will accomplish is 30 seconds on the evening news. Ill be sure to browse the internet for that hour, less green hippies.

I believe I read one time that if everyone in a certain location would turn off all equipment, or if they would pull the breaker switch, that serious problems would occur at the power plant.

Most of your people make me sick! the idea of not having electricity for one hour makes you that mad as to go against Gore's ingenious plan of global warming! and how we should cut down on fuel consumption. . .

Even if global warming is a bunch of crock, how much would it hurt to shut down for an hour? whats the worst that could happen, you could talk to your kids? maybe have a walk around the neighborhood, talk to your neighbors? maybe read a book? maybe play a game with your family? I for one am going to not use any electricity, . .. or drive. . . during that time, and i have also sent it out on a myspace bulletin to all my good friends and family. . . it can't hurt right?

hopefully someone gets some statistics about this year and posts them on here after it happens, i'de like to know how many people actually do this, and how much it affects. . . starred and flagged!

You do know that the amount of energy used to turn back on most things you turn off for the hour is going to use more power than if you left it on for the hour.

So by doing this ridiculous con, you are actually using more energy!

While my heart will be in it, I cannot participate, as I am sure thousands upon thousands will not be able to as well. That is the time of the evening I am readying myself for work, which includes cooking dinner, bathing, fixing lunches, ect. I cannot do it in the dark, I work third so I cannot do it earlier in the day, I will be sleeping, so in honor of this awareness movement I vow to turn off all lights in my house for 1 hour when I get home in the morning! No one will know the difference, how ironic.

I believe its not man made. There have been at least four major ice ages in the Earth's past.
The nine alleged errors in the film
• Mr Gore claims that a sea-level rise of up to 20 feet would be caused by melting of either West Antarctica or Greenland "in the near future". The judge said: "This is distinctly alarmist and part of Mr Gore's "wake-up call". He agreed that if Greenland melted it would release this amount of water - "but only after, and over, millennia"."The Armageddon scenario he predicts, insofar as it suggests that sea level rises of seven metres might occur in the immediate future, is not in line with the scientific consensus."
• The film claims that low-lying inhabited Pacific atolls "are being inundated because of anthropogenic global warming" but the judge ruled there was no evidence of any evacuation having yet happened.
• The documentary speaks of global warming "shutting down the Ocean Conveyor" - the process by which the Gulf Stream is carried over the North Atlantic to western Europe. Citing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the judge said that it was "very unlikely" that the Ocean Conveyor, also known as the Meridional Overturning Circulation, would shut down in the future, though it might slow down.
• Mr Gore claims that two graphs, one plotting a rise in C02 and the other the rise in temperature over a period of 650,000 years, showed "an exact fit". The judge said that, although there was general scientific agreement that there was a connection, "the two graphs do not establish what Mr Gore asserts".
• Mr Gore says the disappearance of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro was directly attributable to global warming, but the judge ruled that it scientists have not established that the recession of snow on Mt Kilimanjaro is primarily attributable to human-induced climate change.
• The film contends that the drying up of Lake Chad is a prime example of a catastrophic result of global warming but the judge said there was insufficient evidence, and that "it is apparently considered to be far more likely to result from other factors, such as population increase and over-grazing, and regional climate variability."
• Mr Gore blames Hurricane Katrina and the consequent devastation in New Orleans on global warming, but the judge ruled there was "insufficient evidence to show that".
• Mr Gore cites a scientific study that shows, for the first time, that polar bears were being found after drowning from "swimming long distances - up to 60 miles - to find the ice" The judge said: "The only scientific study that either side before me can find is one which indicates that four polar bears have recently been found drowned because of a storm."That was not to say there might not in future be drowning-related deaths of bears if the trend of regression of pack ice continued - "but it plainly does not support Mr Gore's description".
• Mr Gore said that coral reefs all over the world were being bleached because of global warming and other factors. Again citing the IPCC, the judge agreed that, if temperatures were to rise by 1-3 degrees centigrade, there would be increased coral bleaching and mortality, unless the coral could adapt. However, he ruled that separating the impacts of stresses due to climate change from other stresses, such as over-fishing, and pollution was difficult.

Here is something al gore conveniently forgot to mention. The ice age. We have had 4. Which mean the earth has gone cold, (ice age) then got worm, (ice melted) then it got cold, (ice age) then it got warmer, (ice melted). That has happened 4 TIMES. See a Patten? However, let us ignore this And continue with our cave man mentality. Which is (we have not seen it with our own eyes as we do not live that long. There fore it’s new to us. It must be our fault.) So tell me, instead of turning my lights off should I
A. Sacrifice my youngest to appease the sun god?
B. Throw rocks at the sun?
We as a person in this age have not gone through global worming before but the earth has. Thank god, most people understand the seasons or we would have people in a panic after winter because it’s getting wormer in spring. Like one poster said in Australia, they keep telling us to help cool the planet. until November, then its “PUT UP AS MANY LIGHTS IN YOUR HOUSE AND GARDEN FOR THE BEST CHRISTMAS DISPLAY WIN CASH”
What a great advertisement for criminals or terrorist HEY DO WHAT YOU WANT on march 29th, we won’t see, because our lights are off.

What’s more of a concern for this planet?

Global Warming and emissions? Or the fact that there are so many stupid people in the world that think switching off the power for an hour is a “good idea” and will make a difference?

It's a natural cycle, wake up people!

I have a better idea why don’t we all jump up at the same time, and alter the earth’s axel and hope it brings cooler conditions, then if we all run on the spot at once in the same direction we might go back in time and reverse our energy use. And lets not forget about 35-40 years ago we were been warned of an ice age just around the corner.

well i agree, the actual event will do little. one could just stick a finger in jello for an hour, instead of turning off their power, for all the actual physical outcome it will produce.

it's more a mental progression that needs to be addressed. humans, as intelligent as we are, do not have any increased moral rights to exclude ourselves from taking care of the place that allows us to live. if anything, our superior intellect should dictate that since we have the knowledge and capability to process complex thoughts and the "higher questions", we should be more bound to act upon what we know.

it's not about being a liberal dirty hippie. it's about being human and thinking that the whole earth is not ours to ruin, that other life exists and is dependent upon our actions as well.

Global Warming is a terror tactic used by the elitists to force carbon taxing across the globe. A large part of that money will be used to fund the shadow government that is very close to having their New World Order. I think 2008 is going to be a bumpy ride!

Good thing someone will be guarding the gates.

My wife and myself will be reading books by flickering candlelight in front of our woodstove during the appointed hour.

Green hippies rock!

I'm not doing this for global warming purposes. I don't believe in it but it is a good excuse to play scrabble by candle light with the wife and kids. For those interested in the global warming debate there are many threads here.

Global warming is not man made but saving energy by shutting everything off for an hour is also not a bad idea. It will also create some "unplugged time" for families which I think is a good thing.

It's also nice to be doing something someone on the other side of the globe is doing at the exact same time. Laugh if you will... Ridicule if you must... We will have our one hour of fun and you will be stewing in the fact that you can't stop us... The distain here makes me wonder if a few here just might be working for the power companies and are worried they may not be making a profit for one hour on Saturday....

Novel idea I like any move to raise consciousness Kudos to you freind your efforts are noble it's all about waking up It would be kind of nice to take a break throughout the world for an hour. On the energy stuff I to believe that we are totally in a natural process this moment meaning collectivley as a planet and beyond ie: universe I'm of the mind that no one human will get of this planet alive but that there are other ways to keep and hold awareness thank you and people of Sydney for showing care for all. I will turn my breakers off for one hour and light a candle. Thank You

THIS IS A STUPID IDEA!!!

If all the lights are turned off simultaneously the power transformers will blow up and there isn´t stock in the world to replace them in months or even in years.

If you want to save energy change to a more energy efficient car, change your light bulbs to low energy consumption ones, turn off the light when you are not in the room, don´t spoil water, walk or ride a bike instead of using the car, use public transportation and so on...

Turning off all the light at the same time its a ridiculous idea and will only be god to watch the stars at night.

could we please all get a damn grip?

This has NOTHING to do with "Saving the Earth"
We cannot destroy The EARTH. The EARTH will be here long after we are gone.

PLEASE Start being honest, it is HUMANS that need the saving.
WE need to conserver because otherwise.. we'll all die, yea that's right.. not the "planet" it's US we need to worry about.
Climate change will kill us.. humans.. not the EARTH!

Protecting the planet is bull#.

If you are one who truly believes that the EARTH is in "danger" then you are a complete IDIOT. 6 Billion years against a few pesky humans over a few centuries destroys a planet?

ugg... at least start being honest.

everytime I see some idiot with a "Save the Earth" placard I want to punch him in the face for being an ignorant moron.
