Iraq's Sadr threatens civil revolt after deadly clashes

news.yahoo.com

BASRA, Iraq (AFP) - Iraq's radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Tuesday threatened a countrywide campaign of civil revolt as security forces battled his militiamen in the southern city of Basra.

Fighting raged from early morning in areas of Basra controlled by Sadr's Mahdi Army militia as troops and police launched a major crackdown on armed groups in the oil hub, considered the nerve centre of Iraq's national economy.

I think everybody in here knows what that means: 4000+ will rise fast if Sadr quits the Cease Fire.

Now we see what is the stance after Cheney and McCain has visited the country. Do US respect its opponents, or is the chaos in the way from here...

I think we all should respect his Mahdi Army. After cease fire attacks to foreign troops has dropped over 70%. I think situation can go from bad to worst in over night.

al-Sadar and his Mahdi army should either incorporate with the Iraq
government

or remain a rouge militia, and subject to being classified as another band of insurgents.

the 'official' ceasefire by Sadar, i would venture to say, is only 50% effective.....

because his Mahdi army ranks are filled with it's share of extremists and ideological zealots which only pretend to ceasefire while engaging in covert actions.... (imho)

You are on target, I speak from experience.

I was part of the orrigional military unit to deal with him, having been stationed in Sadr City in 2003/04. Ive seen the man in person.

He issues them little ID cards to hang around their neck, but when the ID cards come off they do what they want.

You really meet the guy, from who we all talk so much?

What your opinion about his power, and the great "surge" what has happened? I dont want to under estimate efforts of US troops, but I have this feeling, that most of this "success in surge" is result by this cease fire.

Do you agree?
