Simple, because some are too immature to be let outside of the house, either electronically or physically.

For you Einsteins who take your moral direction from an idiot like an angry old comedian, try using such language around my family in my presence. I will gleefully teach you what happens when you use ill manners around the wrong people.

As far as this site goes, here are the terms and conditions of the board:
www.abovetopsecret.com...
There is a censor in place, feel free to type your vulgarity if you have no moral restraint, it will change it to a (c) or a (v), but I suggest knocking off circumventing the censor.
Intelligent people with intelligent vocabularies can communicate without such words, and intelligent people are aware they will be taken as less intelligent if they use gutter language.

Sorry, T.C., but if you deny yourself the language that evolves you are denying "the now." I got editted for showing the language that shouldn't be used. The words are here, wish they wernn't, but they are, we have to to deal with them. As for Carlin, he says what we won't DARE say.

Considering the range of ages of the members at this site, some are young enough to be your children, some are old enough to be your grandparents. You need to moderate your language so that it is appropriate for use in front of your children and grandparents. Or parents or spouse's parents or whoever. It is a public forum. Even with the censors the cursing is theoretically still only allowed when you feel it is important to show the strength of your argument. If you are really heated about things.

There may be sectors of the community where vulgarity is the moral norm, but that is a long way from being the majority. As such it is not allowed to use excessive cursing in these forums. If it is not required to get your point across, then simply don't use it.

We have been very lenient on this, especially with the censor in place. But if the excessive use continues then action will be taken.

Interestingly enough, I have noticed that the handful of highly intelligent and insightful posters we have here, the ones who are truly making a contribution; seldom use "bad" language.
Sure they are perfectly capable of going temporarily insane just like the rest of us, and sometimes they do, but they usually tend to avoid cussing in making their point. I could cite a few names, but we know who they are.

Fortunately though, ATS is a sum of it's whole and we do have the variety of different personalities. Imagine this place without some of the more colorful characters. It wouldnt be the same.
While I myself cuss like a pissed-off drunken sailor at times, I try to avoid it here. Why? Because it does lower people's view of a person when they cannot make a point without resorting to expletives to force a position or fill in a word they can't spell.

My opinion.

Peace,
BG

I feel there are good points on both sides of the fence here, particularly TC's:

"I will gleefully teach you what happens when you use ill manners around the wrong people."

I couldn't agree more, I'd react in exactly the same way. However, there are times when I am infuriated, having a bad day for whatever reason e.t.c. when I do indeed swear, alot!!! If I'm angry and in no mood to put up with someones BS, I'll gladly go for the throat. This is not a regular thing but it does happen. Some will choose to be clever with their words and hint at an insult rather than just spit it out, which I think is showing a lack of honesty and respect to the other person.
If the time calls for it just tell it as it is, don't skinny dip around the subject.
I'm sure many could be forgiven for these occasional and heart-felt outbursts, but it is when people just spit out insults for the sake of it and haven't actually got a brain in their head to have a point, then there's a problem. You don't win an argument with language, but if called for you can certainly make your feelings known.

At the end of the day it's just noises coming out of a voice box from some puny organism.

Why the sensitivity to "curse" words?

I was warned for my use of them, which makes me even wonder why I gave up my points to take the censor off.

There is nothing here that's any worse than anything heard in a school or on a sidewalk.

True. But then there's the whole terms of agreement thing that says excesive cursing is not allowed. We may not like it but thats the way it is. So Im going to try and cut back on the cursing. Unless I am provoked to do some ownage.

The censor option has nothing to do with being 'allowed' to curse. Whether you have the censors on or off cursing is frowned upon. It is only meant to be used sparingly when you are particularly upset about something. The censor option merely allows you to choose whether or not you wish to view the words.

It is very irritating that some long-time and even trusted members are making light of this situation that has long been an important part of the Above Top Secret terms and conditions. First and foremost, this board aspires to a higher level of quality, relevance, and meaning than most of the other more childish and insolent discussion boards that populate the web. We expect that people who come here do so as part of an effort to learn and grow through participation in thoughtful discussion and debate. Secondly, we are concerned about the perception of our content to automatic spiders and content filtering systems. The repeated occurrence of vulgarities can cause this board to be automatically filtered from the computer labs of many school systems, and even the computer access of some public libraries. If you are unable to formulate a coherent sentence without the use of curses and vulgarities (regardless of their commonality in popular usage) then perhaps Above Top Secret and Below Top Secret not the boards for you. It is frustrating that we must cycle through this endless rotation of periodic occurrences of this issue. Especially when seeing some long-time members apparently forgetting the reason why this board exists. Many staff members and board members have given good advice here, the common theme being manners and civility. When posting to these forums on both ATS and BTS, consider what would be good manners and civility when conversing in a public place.
