Out of curiosity I'm interested to see how many people actually believe in Aliens and/or UFOs... I created a free poll and hopefully it will provide pretty good data on what percentage of the public believe or do not believe... Anyway, visit the link and take the poll and cast your vote!

You're missing a fourth option:

"I believe it's possible, but so far evidence is lacking"

Apart from that, it's dope

I believe that would be undecided kind sir

Glad you guys like the idea. I figured if the poll lasted long enough which it should, then we could get some large numbers and good results...

Not really, as to me, the idea is believable, but the evidence doesn't support it
Simply putting "undecided" suggests (to me at least) that there's nothing really stopping me from believing, that it's a flippant decision based on gut feeling as opposed to evidence.

I don't believe in anything. Belief is something you accept as true without good proof. I prefer proof. I don't want to believe. I want to know.

I know there are UFOs. I think at this point most people do. Stuff that flies around, but we don't know what it is.
I have an open mind about aliens, but have yet to be shown any good proof they exist. I neither believe nor disbelieve in them.
From the reports, I suspect some UFOs may represent aspects of spacetime that we don't currently understand, or may never understand. But I have no particularly good proof of it.

I understand where you're coming from... From what you've said thought does this mean you believe in UFOs and/or aliens? If so did you vote yes?

Wouldn't the nature of this forum tend to skew your results somewhat? I know we have our fair share of skeptics but I'm betting most of the folks who freuquent the Aliens & UFOs forum would likely be believers.

I voted yes, BTW.

The question "Do you believe in ufos" implies that it is some sort of religion based on faith and not facts. There is no doubt that ufos exist. This is fact. I can show you the pictures. Well, they are pretty much all on this forum in fact. Whether they are extraterrestrial or not is however a belief. Sorry, I am not saying that to sound like an ass. It's just the standard response I give when someone asks me the very same question.

My answer is yes. I think some ufos are of extraterrestrial origin and that the universe is full of alien life.

I know there are UFOs.
I don't know that there are aliens.

I don't think so, the forums seem to be fairly matched by believers, non-believers and everyone in between... My prediction is a high percentage of people will say yes or undecided vs. no, but I don't think it will have much to do with the fact that it's on ATS... ATS is probably one of the best sources for this information if not the best... It's fair and from what I'm seeing very accurate both ways...

Really.... why wouldn't there be other life in the universe? Whether they're visiting or not, they're almost surely out there somewhere. No offense meant to anyone, but I think it's kinda odd to think there's no life on other planets somewhere. We can barely comprehend the size of the universe, after all. Even if the UFOs we see have an Earthly origin, then that doesn't mean aliens don't exist. Science is even beginning to prove that they're out there, though we don't have an actual "smoking gun" yet.

- Announcement of rocky planets being common
- The fact that Mars, so close to us, could have supported life in the past (or maybe still does to some extent)
- Europa could have microbial life
- Drake Equation (some math for you)
- Amino acids found in meteorites
- The universe does not revolve around Earth (as we have known for centuries)
- Organic materials & water found orbiting a young star (AA Tauri) where planets could form
- Alpha Centauri B could have a planet almost like Earth. That's one of the closest stars to us!
- Astronomers are predicting discovery of or contact with alien life within the next 20 years or so.

I know there's more too. Many of those are recent discoveries.

Maybe the poll should be something like "Are aliens visiting Earth?"

I voted yes as well with qualification. Existence of Aliens? Who knows? I believe in UFO's but I believe they are from our planet until ET takes me for a ride on his bike. There seem to be more and more sightings daily yet less and less actual evidence. However, like everyone else here, I'm standing by for that eventual day of discovery either way! Good thread.

No, that's faith. Belief is most often based on our interpretation of evidence we encounter.

I sometimes suspect that this particular consciousness that I find myself in may not be all it appears. On one hand, it's hard to argue with "cognito ego sum," but I've also experienced losses of consciousness and deja vu, which leads me to suspect that while I might be perceiving myself as physically alive, all of this might be something similar to a video being replayed over and over again. A representation of a life or existence I may once have had, but not the real thing. And just because I can't tell the difference, doesn't mean there isn't one. The science fiction writer Philip K. Dick used to explore this problem in his novels and short stories.

But don't worry. I don't believe in you, either. You may be nothing more than a ghost of my previous existence, too.

He is right, good catch on that... Faith is belief in something without proof... Also the question is "Do you believe in UFOs and/or Aliens?" meaning if you only believe in UFOs you can answer yes, or vice versa... It's an and/or question...

The hardest part of proving any theory is defining the terms, since the simple act of definition is a kind of acceptance of limited term parameters. If the terms are too poorly defined, then the result is suspect. Garbage in, garbage out.

Since "UFO" already contains the word "unidentified," then it's easy to reach a consensus that yes, there are some things flying around that people are unable to identify. The definition automatically leads to proving the statement true. Therefore, I don't have to "believe" there are UFOs. I know there are.

How are we defining the term, "Aliens?" Things from other planets or existing on other planets that we currently define as "alive?" Well, given that definition, and my knowledge of the available evidence and whether any of it has been conclusively proven to be alien, I would have to say at this time that there are no aliens. Some other evidence may turn up in the future that would help prove the hypothesis that aliens exist. So also at this point, I neither "believe" nor "disbelieve" aliens exist. The question is in a virtual state until more information is gathered.

What do you see as the difference between faith and belief? Or the difference between knowledge and belief?
