Guantanamo detainees allowed phone calls

news.yahoo.com

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The U.S. military said Tuesday that it will allow detainees to make regular phone calls to their families from Guantanamo Bay prison, where many have been confined in extreme isolation for as long as six years.
....A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon, said the telephone policy reflects a commitment to maintaining the health and well-being of Guantanamo detainees. No start date has been set for the program.

I wonder if this is part of the "selling good news" plan of the government? I think after six years without so much as a phone call may raise my tension level. I can't believe it took this long for the military to come up with this plan.
My favorite part of the article is when they say they are committed to maintaining the well-being of the prisoners. Especially after the recent new images being released of Abu Ghraib. I think they are dropping the ball on every aspect of our treatment of prisoners. Pretty disgusting IMO.

Chicago lawyer H. Candace Gorman, who represents a Guantanamo detainee, said she learned on a recent visit with her client that prisoners will be allowed to speak with their families for one hour every six months.

Generous to a fault. Is that one 1 hour phone call in six months or can it be split down to multiple calls?

Before you know it, they'll be treating these people like human beings.

Yeah. How long do ya think that will take? The way they have moved on these issues has been like a dripping faucet.

Is that Guantanamo Resort still in operation?

I remember reading articles about enemy combatants HOPING they would be sent to Guantanamo.

What an ironic slap in the face.
