Given the fact that they still present massive ecological harm, drive up international food prices and prevent (or at least delay and distract from)
the culture of alternatives to petro-hyrdocarbon use developing, could you not argue that this is yet another conservative and big business backed
attempt to derail the realisation of mass environmentalism, and re-establish and maintain unfairly favourable positions in international trade and
control of markets?
Plus it actually helps promote GM crops, particularly by putting pressures on developing world food markets to produce more, despite the fact that
they should be naturally benefiting from high prices and expanding naturally, they actually wind up having domestic supply deficiencies because of the
buying power of international food buyers (the west and China) next to domestic customers who are priced out.
And come on, anything 'environmental' promoted by someone with GW Bush's credentials must be considered highly suspect.
