If a spirit does indeed function after death this is the closest the departed will achieve to continue a second existence in this world or (if you believe in a heaven) the next stage of 'life'

I think you chaps are missing the main point. The actual mummy doesn't pop back to life as in the movies. Rather the spirits, the Ba & Ka can return to the mummy bringing it to life. The risen mummy would not be the dried out shell but rather a new spiritual being.
