Great posts all! Thanks for the other links on ATS. This is one of those classics that in my case somehow I had missed. Thirty years have passed I wonder if any statistical anomalies on those affected stand out. I mean medically speaking, have they all pretty much led normal lives or did they have higher rate of cancer, birth defects, sterility ect.

Someone please explain the concept of "mass hysteria" to me.

Yell "Fire" in a crowded theater and lock all but one door... the reaction of the crowd will be 'mass hysteria'. How it applies to isolated incidents between people who don't even have telephones is beyond me... but then I am not a psychiatrist charging you hundreds of dollars an hour to tell you how crazy you are

Ya know this is one of the things that bugs me about ATS.. all the skeptic 'noise' in most UFO threads demanding better research etc... then when a really good post comes along with amazing detail... the thread dies almost ignored by even supposed seekers of truth..

No.

Yelling "fire", causes panic. Mass hysteria is different, it is not a matter of people running around screaming. The Salem Witch trials would be a good example of mass hysteria. In cases of mass hysteria, groups of people can exhibit similar psychosomatic symptoms, real symptoms brought on by the influences of the mind. Mass hysteria is most common in small, isolated communities.

You know what bugs me about ATS? People that complain about people not joining a thread when they don't have anything productive to add. Here you go Zorgon: "Hm. Interesting case."
Feel better now?

The Salem Witch Trials were an interesting case too.

Oh yes much better!1 Thanks

Phage says "Interesting case" That has value

Okay so by your definition then, would you consider the Brazilians who experienced this 'phenomena' to be victims of mass hysteria?

If this is a case of mass-hysteria how can one explain the released data from Operation Saucer which perfectly corroborates that what the witnesses have described.. I mean that would have to imply a government conspiracy + mass hysteria. Could be, but I'm not betting on it.

This case is good, very good. Flabbergastingly amazing. I really don't know what to think of it.

About UFO cases in Brazil, a new movie with Isaiah Washington was recently released, called "Area Q".

Two YouTube videos:

www.youtube.com...

www.youtube.com...

It's a fictional movie, inspired by "real facts". I don't know how real, but looks interesting...
