JERUSALEM — In a sudden surge of violence, an Israeli civilian was killed Wednesday in a rocket attack by Hamas militants from Gaza, the first such fatality in nine months, and at least eight Palestinians, militants and civilians, were killed in Israeli airstrikes before and after the rocket attack.
Israel carried out the first airstrike in southern Gaza on Wednesday morning, hitting a minivan on a road west of Khan Yunis and killing five members of the Hamas military wing, Qassam Brigades, Hamas said. Southern Israel then came under heavy rocket fire, with more than 25 rockets launched in two hours, the Israeli Army said. Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza, claimed responsibility for the rocket barrage, saying it had been retaliating for the Israeli strike.
