Arctic 'Doomsday Vault' Filled With World's Seeds Comes to Life

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Nobel Peace Prize winning environmentalist Wangari Matai will be among the personalities present at the inauguration of the vault, which has been carved into the permafrost of a remote Arctic mountain, just 1000km from the North Pole.

The vault, made up of three spacious cold chambers each measuring 27m by 10m, creates a long trident-shaped tunnel bored into the sandstone and limestone.

It has the capacity to hold up to 4.5 million batches of seeds from all known varieties of the planet’s main food crops, making it possible to re-establish plants if they disappear from their natural environment or are obliterated by major disasters.

I know how important dates are to the elite.
The only reference significant is the Valentines' day of Romania being the 24th, yesterday.

well when the big boys make a move, everyone else knows the time is near......

theres that preverbal writing on the walls....

but why the north pole, why not somewhere high and cold like a mountain range? If something happened how is anyone going to get there....

would think a hiding place in some remote canadian wilderness would be a better place at least its on a land mass that isnt comprised of ice.

Maybe to provide protection from crazy, hungry, mobs. An island fortress.
Are these patented seeds? By Monsanto?
Because if they are, other seeds can be 'terminated' and then these WILL be the ONLY vegetable seeds!

it really doesnt make sense, put the vault in ice, so it can be used when we have a climate change problem? lol seems to me this lil freezer is gonna be 1st hit when something goes wrong, being its at the most major site of world effect and changes... if anything happens in the worl naturewise the north pole normaly is the 1st to start talking about it....

why not a secret bunker insidea box inside a tube of liquid Nitrogen.

You need more than one, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Yeah _Pheonix_ , I must say that is one of the "smarter" single line answers I've seen yet! But seriously, It would make perfect sense to have a "seed bank" out in the middle of nowhere, on a damn island, where it could not be easily access by the public, AND, let us know about it, because you know "they" (whomever that may be) have another, or 50 other of these banks, all over the place!

First rule of government spending: "Why have one, when you can have two for twice the price?"

This one would be calling the attention away from others...those others would be kept out of the media and from the people's knowledge. If something serious do happen, this frozen seed box will pop like pop corn...

You may be right.
It might be just an 'outing' of the plan to ration food sources.
Just letting us know that only THOSE are the protected seeds.(No matter how many there may really be.) So that we're not too surprised if the time comes for selling it to us or making us work for food.

plus if this thing is heavily under lock and key, how is a doomsday survivor supposed to get inside?
This leads me to think they already thought about that, and know that they will be the ones to be able to open it, so therefore they must also have a back up plan of survival already in place. where is the disclosure on that?

The disclosure is, "We are running out of viable foodsources, do what we want and you can get them, (for a price)"

There will be less panic, if we are warned before hand.
They KNOW we can't break in there in an emergency, that's not the issue.
