BAGHDAD -- A barrage of rockets or mortar rounds hit the fortified Green Zone today, casting doubt on a Shiite militia cease-fire less than 24 hours after it was renewed.
The early-morning blasts resonated across the U.S.-protected enclave in Baghdad, which is home to Iraqi government offices, the U.S. Embassy and military bases.
Police in Baghdad said at least seven rounds were fired at the Green Zone, but they had no immediate information on casualties. The U.S. command confirmed the enclave was attacked with "indirect fire," a military term for rockets or mortar rounds, but provided no further details.
