I was expecting something on the West Coast of the US but I didn't think Nevada. I thought off California coast or even Cali/Mex border.

Is this close to Yellowstone???

on the map it looks like it is near some Mines. I wonder if there was activity there and hope that they didn't cause it or are currently in distress because of it.

We have quakes here in Ohio. But not as powerful as the those of the west coast. But Ohio could get hit by a powerful quake sometime in the future.

just wanted to mention.. the whole Lunar angle too. Many felt that there would be an increase in "earth activity" both before and after the lunar eclipse.

Now being who I am, of course I'm going to have to wonder if the eclipse is just being used as a cover to carry out other actions.

quake.wr.usgs.gov...
that's a good one to have handy no matter where you live.
look at this link at least once a day and you'll start to see patterns of frequency , grouping , high numbers of quakes and also things like no quakes for long period's of time where you would expect activity , that's probbably the most scary one of all if thats where you have your place residence.

I live in Salt Lake City and I didn’t feel it…I slept great, but I guess others in the area could tell.
About a year ago they finished a project to lift the capitol building onto a set of springs so it can ride out earthquakes. I hear it is a common practice in places with frequent quakes. No matter where you live people say, “we are over-due for a big one.” Looks like they really believe it here…

I wonder if they felt it in Las Vegas? I wouldn't have wanted to be in the top of the Stratosphere Tower when it hit!

The lunar angle is worth investigating. We've had a few minor earthquakes in my area recently. We only get one that can be felt every 10 or 15 years. I'll have to check but does there seems to be an increase in inland tremors in the US?

I noticed on the map that there was one recently; down around the border region you had mentioned.

no mrmicrophone the interior of the U.S. quite often has smaller earthquakes but look at the bottom of the page and notice the amount of quakes. a normal number there would be in the 400's and today it's in the 600's so there has been a few more than usual.
another odd thing is that the middle of the central valley of california usually doesn't have activity cutting straight across it only around the edge's.
where's your location? my other half can tell me if it's rare to have small quake's there. she uses the usgs quake map as her home page and studies it quite extensively...

I was pretty surprised to wake and hear Nevada had a Quake. Almost the whole state from me, north. You would think it hit here with the news.

There was nothing in Vegas, I am just north of the Strip. I'm not sure we would had felt it even if it was an eight. The energy has a long distance to travel, it was centered pretty close to the top of the state, Vegas is in very far bottom.

I wonder what causesd the quake? Looks like lots of little faults from the map and I know Craters of the Moon NM is just north in Southern Idaho. They have cinder cones and old lava tubes. It is neat that it was so big and not preceeded by regular quakes at least to my first looking at the situation.

Yes but in the NE part of the state? and 6.3 (still waiting on firm number)? I know earthquakes can happen anywhere. Even the US Eastern seaboard.
