Smile your on Camera

www.newsweek.com

The average American is caught on tape some 200 times a day, but for many of us the notion that we're being watched—at all times—has yet to sink in.

A friend of mine was talking about politics and how she could see a total control coming over, not knowing that I myself know. I was just listening to her talk about how she could see possibly a one world government coming, then she said, "Do you know the average American is on tape 200 times a day", she quoted it was on the news last week. I didn't see that but sure enough there was an article on newsweek.

This mass monitoring is even more advanced then we thought. I can't even drive to work without passing 50 cameras. Are they being used to monitor more then just traffic? I think so.

Yep, most have no clue how much of your daily activities are being monitored.

At least we aren't quite to the UK numbers yet.

I'll tell ya one thing...it sure is funny watching what people do that don't know they're being watched, imagine what you have been seen doing....

thats one of the reasons i love living in such a small town in the middle of no where hell we dont even have traffic cameras. im or video maybe 2 times a month when i go to the shrinks and a few times amonth when i go to the store thats it. i hated living in baltimore between all the cameras, traffic cams, and helicopters flying over head using a spot light on the streets it felt so orwellian that i couldent stand it any more.

Don't worry about traffic cameras. The majority of them, the ones right on top of the pole pointing at the stop-line, do not record or transmit anything. All they do is look for contrast changes at the line to sense waiting cars. The more advanced ones can tell the difference between a car, bike, and pedestrian. The most they do is talk to neighboring intersections to improve traffic flow.

Thank God I live in a small area.

There are no cameras in my neighborhood. I get captured on camera alot, but thats because Im still in high school so...

Other then that, they JUST started the Red Light cams here. Other then that, I don't see many at all, other then public areas. Neighborhood and surrounding community is still Big Brother free.

But I'd just go ahead and say privacy is close to dead in America.

Yeah I realized this. My grandfather works in surveillance and I was asking him some questions about cameras and all. He said most of the time there really is nobody paying attention to whats going on unless theres something hugely important happening.

Maybe I'm not paranoid enough yet, but it does not bother me that the sleepy security gaurd occasionally catches me scratching my crotch as I come in or out of the office building...

or when the traffic camera catches a glimpse of me fumbling through CDs as I drive...

or when the ATM machine camera gets me on tape with a cigarette in my mouth...

or when the grocery store security cameras get me buying athletes foot cream...

What? are people afraid of being embarrased to death?

Nobody is looking at these cameras (for the most part).
They are there to be reviewed in the event something does happen.

When I walk out my door into any "public" environment I am fully aware that I may be watched, filmed, recorded, but that is the world we live in.
I can accept that as long as it stops at my front door.
When I'm at home in my black socks and knickers I want my privacy kept intact.

I agree 100%. Thats the difference in our cams and Britans cams. Britan is being watched. Our cameras are just there, nobody cares what anyone else is really doing.

I live in the UK. I got the bus to the train station today and sat on the top deck (seats about 30 people upstairs). There were 3 cameras up there.

That's 3 cameras. On the top deck of a bus. Where about 30 people maximum can sit.

Insane.

Oh darn, I have been making silly faces at them in the hope that a friend at the pd will catch it.

No, I don't think i've ever seen one of those. I've heard plenty of people get yelled at over the PA if they're smoking at a train station or misbehaving on a train or at a shopping centre.

If you go anywhere even vaguely urbanised in this country now you just assume you're on camera. It's unreal seeing them all sometimes.

I bet so. Pics I've seen, cameras are on every single light pole. Crazy.

Well, my normal day is as follows:

Leave House and walk to bus stop (50 yards)
Get on bus - i'm on camera
Get off bus and go onto tube - i'm on camera
Get off tube onto train - i'm on camera
Get off train and onto bus - i'm on camera
Get off bus and walk to office - i'm on camera
Leave office and get on bus - i'm on camera
Get off bus and onto train - i'm on camera
Get off train and onto tube - i'm on camera
Get off tube and onto bus - i'm on camera
Get off bus and walk back home (50 yards)

So a day spanning about 13 hours with a round trip journey of about 100 miles and i'm not on camera for the 5 minutes it takes me to walk to the bus stop from my house.

The weirdest thing is I seem to be the only person I know who thinks there's something not right with that.

It looks like the US is heading in the same direction. Hopefully you guys can do something about it before it really takes hold.

That sounds about right. I remember hearing on BBC once that in London, there's one camera for every ten people.

I should append "yet" to my post. Getting the public accustomed to the traffic light control cameras without everyone shooting them off the poles was the hard part. Adding radio transmitters would be easy. It's not something they could do secretly however.

When that day comes we shall witness the true meaning of the 2nd Amendment. There will be camera corpses littering the streets. You'll be driving along, glance at a camera, and see it explode for no apparent reason. And if you're like me, you'll laugh.
