How did it communicate, could you hear a voice, or was it more of a emotional feeling type of communication, like you just knew what it meant by the feeling?

Have you ever gone back to that tree?

Yes, I was really fortunate, and considered it to be a great honour to be accepted in such a kind and hospitable way.
I was in a dilemma at the time as I was working as a woodland maintenence worker which involved cutting down trees to clear space for younger trees to grow, so I was in the car and saw this tree and asked it if it was OK to be doing what I was doing, feeling a bit silly, and not expecting any response, because although I do consider myself to be a bit of a space cadet, I am quite sceptical.
A voice came jokingly into my head, and it said 'Don't worry, there's plenty more where we came from.' and that was it....Whoosh, and I was out there.
I'll never forget it as long as I live.

Sorry; I was writing my last post as you were posting yours, so didn't see it until I posted mine, but I feel I coincidentally partly answered your question anyway.
The'voice' wasn't a voice in my ear, so to speak, but it was like a feeling that translated itself into words.
I've had telepathic communications with cats in the past, and it was an identical phenomena, a sort of 'already knowing' kind of thing as if the thoughts of other living things were also my own, but didn't originate from me, which I suppose ties in with the idea that everything is one and connected.
I had another experience where I was taken by my 'dead' friend to the 'other side' (Apologies for the excessive use of quotation marks here), and all the beings I encountered communicated with me in the same way, and I also had this almost unbearable feeling of love that almost sent me crazy. It was actually painful.
Anyway, hope this clarifies what I am trying to communicate.
