Vagina in school paper sparks uproar

www.upi.com

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Students at a Los Angeles high school have protested after school officials confiscated an issue of the school newspaper that featured a diagram of a vagina.
...Richard Edmond, 15, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, said the vagina themed issue was aimed at raising awareness about violence against women.
...Edmond and two other students were sent home from school Friday when they refused to change out of homemade white, black and pink T-shirts reading: "My vagina is obscene."

Ok. I understand everyone's view about the Oregon guy arrested for his posting online. But how about this one? Did this kid really go to far? He is an editor of the paper. What kind of lesson are we teaching about freedom of speech when it is taken away from him? Did this actually hurt anyone? Again, people's view of "obscene" is the issue. As this article he wrote was about the famed "Vagina Monologues", I do not see how this merited confiscation of the papers and him being sent home because of his T-shirt.
At 15, kids nowadays are WELL aware of sexuality. I just don't understand why the people who are "offended" always seem to win these battles. At the very least, the kid's parents should have sat their children down and discussed the actual "Vagina Monologue's" intentions and not freaked out over the diagram.

You mean girls must not be allowed in schools? Or certain select pictures?

I'm just looking for clarification, Thanks.

My only question is this.

If the paper was aimed at raising awareness of violence against women why show a diagram of a vagina?

I mean when I think of violence against women I really don’t think vagina. I think of rape and the many other forms of abuse but not vagina.

I don’t see that there was necessarily anything wrong with it, but it might have been more of an attention type of situation. At that age most of us more than likely did some sort of “shock” things to get attention.

Other than the fact that the diagram has nothing to do with what the paper was about I don’t see why the school pulled the paper.

Their shirts while worn to prove a point were also somewhat of a “shock” way to draw attention.

I would say the school officials over reacted, at the same time I don’t see the point of the diagram. Both parties on this story make little sense on their reasoning.

Do you realise how funny that is to someone from the UK?

Obviously this is one big joke.

I agree 100% with you vaginas should be confiscated, tagged and put behind bars.

How dare this high schoolers playing with such dangerous objects.

Stop! Please, you're killing me! I can't get the mental imagery of that last sentence out of my head

On topic, I'd have to agree with Raist. Neither side of the issue made sense.

That's an easy one. The school officials freaked out at the probable back lash from certain parents. I am sure they all were either laughing at or saying, nice pic, behind closed doors.
I would agree that it had a lot to do with trying to get attention as you suggest. But, at the same time, people worry too much about being PC, especially over something such as this.

and marg....that was freaking hilarious......

I would more than likely just laugh if I saw a shirt that said this though "My vagina is obscene." I really hope the two wearing these shirts were female.

Marg,

I’m having a hard time determining which is funnier your comment or the shirts.

Well, the editor's name is Richard, the other two we do not know about. But what a great idea....I applaud the kids for essentially giving obsurd authority the finger.

You know I actually wanted to be a littler bit sarcastic as I read the article, been a woman I feel sometimes that certain issues in relation with female and male body parts is made into a big deal.

Is nothing we females can do about our female parts we have them for life.

palehorse,

I will agree with you on this one. It seems to be a harmless rebellion of sorts.

I would much rather my 15 year old come home from school with a diagram of a vagina than to come home drunk or high. I mean they could be doing much worse things than this.

They do have surgeries that can “fix” some of those parts.

They have other surgeries combined with drugs that can change those parts as well.

But I would rather a woman stay a woman since I like their parts the way they are.

And they are mighty fine things of which you are rightly proud of.
They are the source of endless fun and serve a most practical purpose.
Why anyone should be ashamed or embarrased about the human body is beyong me. :shk:

You've got that right. With the way most young people are being portrayed these days, I am actually glad to see some youngsters being involved with newspapers. Hopefully they just don't get sucked into MSM.

Id wager a dollar to a donut that if a "waterboarding and torture" article were written in the school paper, with illustrations and proper implementation; nothing would have been said.

But a vagina....

Americans have such strange and perverted sensibilities.

It's a brave new world, welcome to the monkey house!
