This has not gone down well with Russia who also are convinced that the U.S. is shooting down the spy satellite as a test of their missile, this could lead to something big.

The possibility for war starting in the Balkans because of Kosovo's intention of declaring independence later today is there. I don't know if itwould spread into another World War. Once before it did, though when Serbian nationalists assassinated Archduke Ferdinand in late June or early July of 1914.

I’m worried because their independence is backed by the U.S and E.U. Russia might use this as a reason. As they don’t like U.S having a missile defence system in E.U. If Russia do something then the U.S will respond which could lead other countries to react to that. And so on, it could get messy quick. All depends what Russia do

Now the really scary part is if the U.S. uses Kosovo as a "missile defense" site. I'm afraid to see how Russia would like that, but hopefully our (sarcasm on) smart and thoughtful of the reactions to their actions government (sarcasm off) will think of this and not plan to use newly independent Kosovo as a missile silo.

As an American i AM opposed this, it looks to me like a land grab by the EU+US. The media in the US today made a 30 second mention of the independance, they showed a video of people celebrating by waving American and Albanian flags. It really kills me how they pawn it off as something good. Thankfully we have the internet to visit sites like this and international news to get the real story.

Independance?

Well if they declared independance, where is their FLAG - all I see is Albanian flags, which basicly means that Albania "won" Kosovo from Serbia. And the majority of people living in Kosovo already have their country with independance: it is called Albania.

just released by Reuters... take a read...

www.alertnet.org...

"In these days following the declaration of independence, Mercy Corps is monitoring and assessing the situation on the ground. We do not anticipate violence or humanitarian issues, but if any do arise, we are poised to quickly respond in coordination with local authorities, local community leaders and other international actors."

the new Kossovo flag which , as you may have noticed, sends a strong signal to the EU , the colour , the stars .
After all that new country is going to need a lot of funds to be able to survive/exist at all.
And the money will flow , in large quantities , from the EU to prevent a (civil) war, to stop the saudis from trying to build another wahhabite beachead and of course from the saudis , for their balkan brothers in faith .
I already mentionned in another post that a friend of mine just came back from a 10 months mission in Kossovo , with the international police force , the first signs of radicalisation are appearing already , veiled women and foreign imams preaching a different view of islam.
Call me pessimistic , but i fear that we've just got ourselves a big problem to deal with on an international scale

I agree with you 100%, while I dont think it will escalate into a world war, I do think there will be some sort of armed confrontation in the Balkans within the next few years.

And yet once again we will take the wrong side. I find it so funny how we are supposedly so against radical Islam but yet here in Kosovo and before that in Bosnia look which side we are supporting. It really makes me sick

New Kosovo Flag

What a Great flag.

I mean can it be even more European?

In any case, I did not see this flags waving on the many photos on the streets of Pristina - there were Albanian flags, American flags, Slovenian flags. In any case, as you probably noticed, I do not agree with this indepedance. Many similar events will follow - only this time from certain countries of former Soviet Union.

The world will now stew over a slew of secessions, or perhaps the Russians will send their troops to Serbia to take back Kosovo.

I doubt the Russians and Serbians will do too much over the newly independent Kosova.

I expect they will use this opportunity to get Srpska in Bosnia to declare independence and then join Serbia.

We'll likely see Russia -- if in a tit for tat mood -- push for Ossetia's independence from Georgia (whilst carefully forgetting about Chechnya...).

I am especially interested to see what the U.S. American government does with the Republic of Lakota and all of the Native American populations that could now declare their independence. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
