in general it seems linux doesnt' support plug and play ESATA yet. so you need to have the drive connected and turned on when the machine boots.
that way linux detects it as a regular sata drive. you also shouldn't unplug/power off the drive until you shutdown linux.
if you've done that and it still isn't seeing it, it could just be a matter of it not getting mounted automatically, or your kernel may not have
sata support built in/modules loaded.
