Flu among top reasons for ER visit

www.upi.com

FAIRFIELD, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Flu-related symptoms are among the top five causes of emergency department visits, a U.S. expert in emergency medicine says.
Dr. Linda Lawrence, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, reports that as of last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta advises widespread flu activity has been reported in 31 states, up 11 from the week before.

The flu is on the rise folks. every day it gets worse and worse. I just don't get how people can advocate getting the shots.

out of allllll the reasons to possibly have to go to the ED, the flu makes the top 5. that's all I need. I am curious though as to how many of the ED flu visitors actually got the vaccine. That is some digging to do that I am not sure I will find an answer to. I keep stating that the flu changes too rapidly and will get the better of us someday. This is yet another check mark in that column IMO.

I went to the doctor to get my throat swabbed because I thought I had strep..I didnt thank goodness, because I get scarlet fever right along with it everytime

But he did tell me that they have been seeing 6 to 8 cases a day the last two weeks of confirmed flu cases, mostly in children.

My sons class had 10 kids out sick with 2 more sent home (out of 19 total) one day last week, 3 or 4 of those kids missed the entire week, which points to flu.

The news also said that the strain here isnt covered by this years shot, so even if you got it, your screwed!

It is astonishing that in two weeks time the flu became widepread in 44 states. I have also read that the flu vaccine may not help because there are several strains. I have opted not to take the vaccine. This is serious, the news reported that some schools are shut down and nursing homes are on lock down.

During week 6 (February 3 - 9, 2008), influenza activity continued to increase in the United States.

The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was above the epidemic threshold for the fifth consecutive week.

I know of one nursing home that was locked down but it wasn't the flu, it was the Noro virus. The same thing that hit those cruise ships for the last few years were large numbers of the travellers got sick.

Most anti bacterials and germacides don't even affect the Noro, they have to use a special disenfectant to kill that bug.

My entire famiy have had the "cruise ship" virus on dry land. Today, being the 5th day, i feel a little stronger and so does everyone else.

My daughter in law fell faint in the bathroom and her hands cramped up and we both thought she was having a stroke, so i called 9/11 and they said she wasnt breating properly bla bla bla and that's why her hands cramped.

"What would you like us to do for her"? Asked one of them...I said "Take her bloodpressure at least?"

The whole time they were 10 feet away from her.

Gee i wonder if they know something we dont know.

Hearing things like this make me feel much better about the fact that I don't get a flu shot. People are always trying to talk me into getting one, but I just don't want to. Now I know that it might not even make a difference... All these crazy new mutated strains out there and everything.

Do you know the name of the disinfectant they use and or what it contains?

We've had a school close down here with 80% of the kids infected. There's a few cases in my family. I've been battling back a mild case of noro myself, so I've enacted a personal quarantine with minimal contact. Figure a couple weeks as a hermit and the epidemic will subside with the warmer weather.

The Emergency and Disaster Information service has today listed the flu as an epidemic in the Chicago area. It also says there are 10 resistant infections.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued a health alert to doctors and hospitals because ten Chicago-area patients have tested positive for an unusual type of drug-resistant influenza. Authorities say the strain of flu can be successfully treated with some drugs, but it does not respond to Tamiflu, which is the most common antiviral medication for flu. The alert suggests that flu patients who are in intensive care be given a combination of drugs. Authorities say eight of the ten Tamiflu-resistant infections came from an outbreak at a single Chicago health care facility. They did not release the name of that facility.)

I recently read (trying to remember so I can post) that only 30-40 percent of the flu strains are being targeted by this years vaccine. Not a good percentage. Who said it had to be the Bird Flu that would wipe us out. Take a look around. By the time the Bird Flu hits, it will be too late.
