What could you hope to achieve with a portable (suitcase-sized?) EMP weapon unless it was also a nuclear weapon?

nuclear weapons are probably the only existing devices that could really create electromagnetic pulses with a blackout punch. EMPs from a nuclear blast would contain intense electric and magnetic fields. These fields would generate, in power cables, overwhelming electrical currents which would trip circuit breakers and temporarily shut down a city's power grid.

However, there's more to the Air Force plan than keeping satellites safe. The Evolutionary Air and Space Global Laser Engagement, or EAGLE, project aims to put mirrors underneath an airship 25 times the size of the Goodyear blimp. In theory, lasers -- fired from the ground, from space, or from the air -- would bounce off these blimp-borne mirrors, to track or even destroy enemy missiles.

Incredible as it sounds, the EAGLE effort is underway at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy division, sources there confirm. Also under research at the lab is the Ground-Based Laser, which, according to the Air Force report, would shoot "laser beams through the atmosphere" to knock out enemy spacecraft in low-earth orbit.

Why does someone say this stuff could not exist in 1960's COUGH WW2 German technology cough 1940's they had space planes an missles on drawing board that were only 5 years away from being deployed makeing it 1950's, also where do you think 90 percent our technology came from COGH German Nazi scientists, so this type of stuff can easy be made back then an be secret, military is always like 40 years ahead of public stuff its just kept secret, just look at stealth fighters made in late 70's an was public in 90's
