Can anyone offer an explanation for the green object found in this Slooh telescope photo?

Here you can find more about green fireballs:

Green Meteorite (??) spotted North of Toronto

Now, the green object in the image that you have posted, looks like a long
exposure pattern (where "long exposure" may be even 20-30/100th of seconds), repeated three times, of an object with incostant brightness, i'd say almost flashing:

i'd say a meteor, but of course, this is just my opinion. Are there more infos about this one?

First, thanks for the links to the additional resources. I will access later to increase my liberal education.

Here is the history of the photo.

My friend, a PGA golf club pro (unquestionable integrity), has access to the Slooh telescope thru a paid membership. On 8 January, about 1 pm EDT, I visited his clubhouse to chew the off-season fat. He showed me the Slooh site and discussed his lifelong interest in astronomy. Before leaving I asked him if he had ever seen anything 'interesting', ie. UFO caliber. At 4:17 pm EDT (I still have the email) he sent me the photo with this text.

"I thought you would like this image. In the center you can see the
Barred Spiral Galaxy NGC 1365, not very clearly I might add, but it was
early in the image.

On the top of the image is a green line. That is "something" that
happened to fly by as the picture was being taken. You ask if I ever saw
that, well I did not see it happen live, but I know it just
happened....funny how that works out."

I am not predisposed to a UFO explanation, but offer this to the community for their professional study and hopefully, a solid scientific explanation.

However, I do find a coincidental link timewise to the Stephenville, Texas sightings, the majority of which took place on the same evening, 8 January, as the day of this photo ;-) Perhaps the visitors stopped for lunch on the way.

Feel free to post on other sites if that will speed the process of a positive ID. Just let me know what those sites are so I can track the feedback.

Thanks!

I have sent the photo to Jeff Ritzmann for his expert analysis. I am still awaiting his reply, but expect it to be interesting.

Jeff is simply the BEST of the BEST. I don't know what will be his conclusion, but of course it will be a TRAINED one. Good choice.

Nice pic. SLOOH images are built by exposing the camera through a succession of color filters; green, red, and blue. If you look at the "Scope Info" on the mission interface during the exposure you can see as the various filters are used. The full-color image is created by combining the filtered images.

So, if a satellite or meteor streaks across the field of view during exposure, it will be the color of whatever filter is being used at the time. If the object is moving slowly enough you will see a dashed line of white, green, red, and blue.

Fast objects, like meteors, are usually caught by only one color filter.

I've captured a few pics on SLOOH of "oddities..

The regularity of the "flashes" in your pic leads me to believe this is a satellite caught by the green filter.

IAttackPeople, thank you for your ( as always) excellent analisys. Frankly, i didn't know the filters they used, because my take is to take all as "genuine": i wanted just to show how many times a green fireball has been caught over our heads ... Please check your U2U

I saw something like this a few weeks ago, but it hovered for a second and then dashed off with a green streak.

a week ago i saw 2 intense flashes of light and then nothing about 20 time the size of a star and no sound. hmmm

Now I'm not sure if it's a satellite or meteor. I'm leaning toward flashing meteor now.

Anyway, I posted this in the SLOOH forums to see what they think.

every so often a pic like this shows up here at ATS. as the picture was taken of a deep sky object at night, required a timed exposure, andy light source moving in the frame will take on a streak feature. Many times I have had good pictures ruined by a plane flying through the frame, and they look exactly like this. The flashing lights on the plane cause the streak and brightening of the streak every second or so.

If it was a plane wouldn't we expect white or red or yellow, not green? Curious.

www.youtube.com...

A more Earth bound green light in the sky.

The electrical rigid momentum suspension of the air is preventing
further movement.

Stuck in one place and can't get out.

Sparks can't be green, cross some wires some time....

You have to let go, release the suspension and reapply.. hope it works.
Then deflect the electrical momentum and go.

The time derivative of Momentum (dM/dt) is equal to Force.
Instant acceleration from electric currents.

Yeah, definitely an electrically propelled air craft.

ED: Looks like you have two distinct light sources in those fireball,
thus you have the triangle craft that somehow on edge shows two
light sources.

This is coincidental, two nights ago I winessed a green meteor/falling star whatever you prefer to call it and it was the most impressive to date I have ever seen.

I have seen many over the years and I would say I see 1 or 2 every 2 or 3 weeks.

They are all pretty much the same and I speculate they are just space dust as they fizzle out quite low before contact with the ground. I have sometimes tried to find a trace of them on the ground but never have.

Of course what made this one stand out was the colour, it started out yellow brightened to incadescent white and then green.

Previosly the best sighting was a meteor shower and I couldn't count them there was so many.

Welcome to ATS by the way.

Thanks for the welcome. Unfortunately I may be 'out of pocket' for up to 10 days without net access. I hope that Ritzmann and others weigh in on this and then we can take a vote upon my surfacing :-)
