Technology exists now that allows scientists to transplant a gene into toads and fish to alter them so that they only have male offspring. Once the gene has be introduced into the species and run it's course the net effect is the decimation of that species. Wiping them out completely.

If you don't think this will have an impact on the human species at some point in the future think again....in the 90's scientists discovered the gene that determines sex in humans.

Would we wipe ourselves out? Probably not. Eugenics is more likely where we'll see this science developing or attempting control.

Currently the technology is being used as a biological control against invasive species.

Makes for interesting reading.

Killing of the Cane Toad

A key question is whether the global reach of modern human society can be matched by an appropriate sense of responsibility. One critical element of this question is the definition of "native," a concept with challenging spatial and temporal dimensions. While every species is native to a particular geographic area, this is just a snapshot in time, because species are constantly expanding and contracting their ranges, sometimes with human help.

Quoted from here

4.15 The Bureau of Rural Sciences argued that six criteria that must be met for an eradication to be successful. These are:

* The rate of removal must exceed the rate of increase at all population densities

* Immigration must be zero or the probability of reinvasion should be considered

* Target species must be detectable at low densities

* All reproductive individuals must be at risk

* Discounted cost-benefit analysis must favour eradication over control; economics should favour eradication

* There must be a suitable socio-political environment; adequate resources must be committed to see the eradication project through to completion; and clear lines of authority must be established.
