Skeptic Answered - ATS MIX Show 77
Having been on ATS for some time now, and a regular reader of the Alien/UFO forums, I often see threads where the OP has posted a link to
photos/video of a suspected UFO/alien, which is obviously (at least to my eyes) something much more mundane. There are numerous examples here on ATS,
including photos/vids of high altitude contrails lit by the setting sun, clouds which hide supposed semi-cloaked UFOs, and bushes that are supposed to
conceal EBE's etc...
Many of these are quickly debunked by the more observant members on here, but they often linger on, with less experienced members coming along and
stirring things up again, despite it being obvious to the majority that OP has something much more mundane. Let me be clear that I have no problem
with people posting such threads in the first place, and see it as a necessary way for members to start off an investigation into something they think
might be un-usual.
My questions to you are:
Don't you think that by allowing such threads to continue, we are potentially harming the reputation of ATS, when it it obvious there is nothing
further to gain by letting these "red-herrings" run?
Do you think it would not be better to close (or even add an official warning to the thread title) these threads, thereby acknowledging that they are
dead-ends?
We do it with "hoax" threads (by adding a warning/label), why not these?
Would you consider having a specific team of experienced UFO investigators/people knowledgeable in atmospheric or celestial phenomena (the already
existing mods could do it I suppose) who's job it would be to close threads that have obviously been debunked and are not going anywhere?
