Ha ha, and look how messed that's become!

In a town just up the road from where I live there is a large Evangelical, happy-clappers, Born Again Church with one of the biggest congregations of its type in the whole of the UK.

Perhaps attracted to the bright lights they sometimes venture here and are seen in the town centre preaching their own particular brand of fire and brimstone.
They don't seem to get much joy.
But even funnier are the odd American missionaries who have come over here to save us from The Devil who are met with open mouthed bewilderment. People are astounded to meet someone from The States and treat them as if they were some throwback from an unenlightened long forgotten time or as if they are intellectually challenged.
Obviously the Yanks have no idea how to react to the overwhelming indifference shown to religion.

We may have historical links to Quakers here but we are most definitely not a hot bed of religious faith and fervour.

I guess the problem i have with Sharia courts is the brutal nature of the punishments. You realise most Muslims in the UK would prefer Sharia law? In London Muslims make up over 12% of the population. Thats a lot of people in London that think it's ok to mutilate criminals or oppress women. I just don't think certain countries culture and traditions implement well into British society and our all inclusive, open borders, multi-cultural approach is in need of some more stringent background checks and controls.

Might seem racist but it's not about the colour of anyone's skin, it's about the erosion of traditional British values and morals. Especially with some of the outrageous teachings at predominantly Muslim schools and Mosques.

To be fair every Muslim i have meet in London has been lovely and friendly, i'm only talking about the extremists. I also think that with time and more rapport between the communities we could implement immigrants from Islamic countries more gradually while appreciating each other more.

The British people will never allow Sharia Law; their would be Civil War first!
We can not allow individual sections of British society to be governed by a different set of laws as the National Laws.
Once we do it for one we do it for all and then we have chaos.

It's British Law or outlaw!

Hear, hear!

Let this be a clarion call to our leaders - we must avoid any imposition of alien & damaging cultures which might in any way diminish the rights of our citizens, indeed with the same being completely against our own sense of national identity, cultural acceptability & general self-worth as a free & self-directed people. Sharia law is barbaric, unjust, anti-democratic & actively decimates the good works that freedom-loving people across the world have taken as strides in the race towards enlightenment over the past five hundred years...!!!

I fully & unequivocally agree that the archbishop should bloody well wind his neck in!

I have a slightly differing view on it. I don't, per say, have a problem with religious law (Jewish, Muslim or whatever). Religious Law is not suppoised to take precedent over nationa laws and is for more socio-cultural aspects of life.

The problem, as i see it, is therefore not so much religious law itslef but rather that it is abused. For example with Sharia Law, husbands using it as an excuse to have a Sharia marriage rather than a legal marriage as a Sharia marriage offers the wife no protection. It isn't therefore the Sharia Law itself that is at fault but rather how some are choosing to implement it.

So maybe, rather than banning religious law, we need to find a legal framework that tightens up implementation. As with anything like this, it is even possible that this framework already exists but simply isn't being enforced.

I'm not particularly religious myself, beyond a passing nod to Christianity, but i have no issue with people wanting to live their lives according to their beliefs. I do have a problem when those beliefs intrude on the laws of the land.

Haha we have a big old Church of Latter Day Saints not so far from me. As such, we often have suited and booted Americans walking around, knoicking on doors. You can always tell the new comers from those that have been door knocking here in blighty for a while - for a start it is bright, shiny eyes as opposed to the dull, resigned look of the veterans......

Indeed.

Or when people seek to impose their religious beliefs and laws on others!
