Concerning human consciousness from a Mayan Elder's perspective...

If you have the time, reading this interview with Carlos Barrios - a Mayan Elder and author of Kam Wuj: El Libro del Destino... will expand, if not enlighten your consciousness to the realities of our current world.

www.mayamysteryschool.com...

For those of you that don't want to read the whole thing - here is the part that really hit home for me. I found the last paragraph of this to be some of the most inspiring thoughts I've ever come across.

Mr. Barrios states in his closing comments,

"The greatest wisdom is in simplicity." Mr. Barrios advised before leaving Santa Fe. "Love, respect, tolerance, sharing, gratitude, forgiveness. It's not complex or elaborate. The real knowledge is free. It's encoded in your DNA. All you need is within you. Great teachers have said that from the beginning. Find your heart and you will find your way."

With all that we deliberate over, defend, share, accuse, and deny... I think it is imperative that we don't forget ourselves and how truly amazing and vitally unique and important each and every one of us is - and how our actions in the coming years will shape the world for our children to grow up in.

I hope you can all feel the genuine words I've written here. Perhaps this is the solution everyone has always been looking for? Any problem, any situation. Within our very hearts lie the answers.

What he forgets to take into account though, is some peoples hearts are filled with only hate, or sorrow, or pain, or a combination of those and other things.
Their hearts are hardly in any condition to be listened to.

Someone else said, "The kingdom of God is within" and "where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". More ancient words to live by.
Hopefully, someday we'll be an ancient civilization of which it is said, they passed on wisdom.

LoL! I see precious little wisdom in our current civilization beyond technological.
But that is just me.

Wraoth, notice I said "hopefully"
Give us a few more years

There will always be poor, there will always be hate, sorrow, pain. Words of wisdom can be heard but not understood, heard but not properly attended to, or heard and used well. Not everyone is the same about wisdom. That is how it is. The world is about civilizations but Life is about individuals.

I hope we can someday learn to let go of things like fear, hate, and anger... but god knows thats extremely difficult

WOW! perfect! If people could learn to think this way our entire world would be in for a change. I know a LOT of really screwed up people who do it to themselves... On more than one interaction with these people I tried to get them to understand that my personal musical philosophy is the best view to get a decent perspective on life. the exact statement is "Simplicity is Key!". Which truly does apply to EVERY aspect of the human reality.

thats my $.02 on that!

"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering...."

Spoken by another very wise elder, Yoda. We are all scared of something.

Logan's Run? A perfect civilization in a finite world. But you have to check out at 30.
Stephen Hawking was right. Our only chance is to establish mankind on another rock/s. If their is boundless fruit for everyone why take to the sword? Or is tribalism that inbred in our dna?
The useless eaters, too old/infirm to work, what good are they? (very soon to be me, 44). I liked how the indians did it, you reached a state of infirmirary or inability to contribute, and you just take a long one way walk into the forest.

Ah but whatever works for you won't always work for others.
We are not all the same after all and to say that you have the best of it rings rather egotistical does it not?

Very enlightened posts. Indeed, allow yourselves to become clear of fear, then look inside into your "hearts" and allow your thought to evolve. You don't need to be religious to accept the wisdoms of great teachers; just be sincere in spirituality.

Ego would go against Simplicity. While it may not be right for you; I see no validity in that claim... that is of course unless you prefer complexities in your life.

I'm a little confused as how my pointing out that I had believed what this Mayan Shaman was saying before I had heard about it is egotistical in any way shape or form.

your looking at things through too complex of a view... Simplify it.

Yes, glad Dorian brought up about fear. And Yoda, too

When I grew up, my church didn't deal with fear too well. I don't think they learned lessons about "fear not...", "love casts out fear", "Don't be afraid...", etc. Good Lord, they seemed afraid of women even; would never have one as a priest!

Hmmm...maybe all this fear introduced in the world today is blinding civilizations and their citizens to what good they are capable of...
Sigh...I guess I'm always hopeful...bottom line, though, even if the civilzation you live in is not wise, individuals can be wise. OK, now I'm thinking of MLK. He spread wise words in troubled times. Ghandi.

Hmmmm...I'm sure there are others...I'll bet even the ancient Mayan culture was not all milk and honey all the time, yet Carlos Barrios still transmits a beautiful teaching.

Excellent thoughts to you all, on the both sides of the coin. The title of this thread alone has attracted interesting individuals!

I tend to think that when people respond to questions like this, they are simply reflecting their own realities back at us, looking in a mirror if you will.

For those of you that DONT find any comfort in these thoughts, you are who I'm directly interested in. I pray that you someday can be at peace with yourself.

It IS simple. Deep down we all know if we're headed in the right direction or not. Once again, the answers are within you.

And to address the claim that we are all on different paths - I completely agree!! However, that does not nullify the fact that we are all PART of this universe, we're all here for some reason or another, and I think that this reason alone grants us similarities in this journey. In other words, I think that EVERYONE is capable of reaching a higher level of consciousness (through whatever path works for them).

There is a solution you have not mentioned so I'll do that now.

The solution is to perceive, at amplified levels, all the pain you create for others. This is why Near Death Experiences *COMPLETELY* transform people. It is the first time in thier lives they have -ever- felt the pain of anyone else other than themselves.

The solution is empathy.

Our genetics are so [F* ed] up that we don't have a chance in hell of our -entire- race reaching even a remedial level of empathy. It's just not going to happen through evolution.

The only way empathy will ever happen is through technology. Would the engineering types among us please propose, even in rarefied futuristic terms, of how technology might achieve this?

I'm listening. Here is more of what led me to this:

... and so even separate paths can lead into a same place

It was very well said by desert in this thread that the kingdom of god is in you, and you are god's son / daughter, just as was Jesus and all of us. If more people were to realize this, things would turn out fine.

How I see it, the path lasts through your life - and when finally you are dying, and if you led a good life you shall have no regrets or doubts about what is coming - you'll face death with peaceful calmness. But if you have been lost throughout your life, then you will have doubts on your deathbed.

Good life is something that everyone can gain, no matter how poor or rich. Just stop fearing, have more compassion and never get angered, and if you do, have regret and apologize. Sometimes look into yourself like you would look into a mirror, and observe you inner self, your motivations, ethics and possible beliefs.

But shall you have fearful life, you will be never satisfied, more wealthier you be, more you have to be afraid of. And more you have, the more you love it - and more you love it, more you will be afraid of death, because you don't want to lose it.

But what the heck - all this stuff I'm repeating have been already said, and people have had thousands of years to put them into practice, and those who had, have had a good life.

Once while in a heavy meditative state, I heard almost those exact words stated in my head-"Everything you will ever need is right inside of you." I haven't figured out if the words came from my higher self, or from a guide or some other source, but it was a revelation that moved me and I totally understood what it meant.

It's very enlightening isn't it? We sell ourselves short unfortunately - perhaps this "shift of consciousness" that many predict ... will encompass a greater understanding of our own "self".
