You really think Ron Paul will "change things." That's sad.

First off, he's cashing in on Bush's ham-headed policy burning out the Republican base. He yabbers on about the constitution, while declaring the Constitution itself unconstitutional (Article 1, Section 8, and the 16th amendment in particular) and making claims of the president having legislative power (which, if you look in the Constitution is blatantly untrue) by which he will singlehandedly wrestle the evil liberals (See? same tune!) to the ground. Add to this that he wants to dissolve your rights on the federal level and then put them up for grabs on a state-by-state basis and believes isolationism is an acceptable foreign policy in the post-19th century world...

It's not that the guy's ideas are "unacceptable to the mainstream" it's that what he's preaching us stupid and unconstitutional.

Just a few small comments.

The president does have legislative powers by means of executive orders. Law with the stroke of a pen.

The Federal government exists to protect our rights, not to grant them. Our rights are given by birth, not by the government. Thus this little gem of wisdom,

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Local governments are always more responsive to the desires and needs of its people than a distant body, unwilling or uncaring of the desires of its citizens. For example, the people in Utah would be better served by local politicians deciding, with the input of the local citizens, what is best for Utah. Not some Ivory tower career politician in Washington DC deciding what is best for Utah with the help of lobbyists.

And finally, Ron Paul is non-interventionist, not an Isolationist.
