LONGYEARBYEN, Norway, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Seeds from more than 200,000 of the Earth's crops are being stored in an underground Norwegian vault capable of keeping them safe for thousands of years.

Does Norway know something the rest of the world doesn't know? I wonder what else they're storing in their doomsday vault.

The second link tells where the vault is located and when they started pulling this all together. The article says the vault is back by 100 countries. This is actually the first I've heard of this.

I can grow a mean garden- any chance they can store me in this safe vault for a thousand years? After all- when these seeds are needed- we are going to need somebody to grow them....

OK what could threaten the planet enough to make a giant seed bank in Norway?
*Global warming/Ice age = climate change
*Runaway biotechnology creates invasive plants that crowd out native ecosystems
* Earth hit by object from space
* mega volcano
* aliens burn every living thing with death ray
* aliens eat every living thing

If a new ice age is upon us then why put the seedbank in Norway where the glaciers are predicted to encroach again?

I think the seed bank is a terrific idea on many levels. I believe it is prudent to preserve the genetic diversity of this world and to preserve ways of regenerating life forms after an ecosystem collapse.

I could just imagine the scenario...

...Earth gets destroyed by rogue comet/aliens/(insert other doomsday scenario here)...

...all humans, crops and animals are destroyed...

...1,000 years later man suddenly re-evolves/emerges somehow...

...finds doomsday vault and decided to eat all the seeds not knowing they're supposed to be grown...

...mankind dies out again...

Even if there is no cataclysmic event on the horizon, there is still a good reason to have a doomsday vault. It ensures that we have a backup for plants in case of major droughts, or in the event that a surprise doomsday event occurs. I wouldnt put too much faith in Norway knowing something is coming.

Probably want to store all the non genetic modified seeds since they know that after a while our GM crops are going to become a major problem.

A way to keep some of the purity of nature amongst mankinds drive to alter all things natural in ways that they deem fitting.

wow Gools, that article seems to say just about what I've been theorizing.

GM crops are gonna screw us over big time...ya wanna reduce the population...reduce the food available. We'll fight over what there is and perish when there isn't.

That is interesting. Bill Gates retiring is also raising my curiosity about what is really going on. It is probably nothing, but it all adds up to something strange.

Personally I thinks it's the GMO's. Due to cross pollenation there will be no natural seeds left.

As interesting as this is, I would still have to wonder why they would just choose one place. Most likely there would have to be several of these storage facilities in case this one is lost.

Being underground may not guarantee it won't be destroyed from the bottom up either. I suppose they already figured this out by doing a geological survey as it being a safe place.

Something may happen in 2012 or it may not. I don't see any harm in doing this anyway. I personally liked the movie Blast from the Past and if we have the technology, it isn't such a bad idea.

No doubt there are several countries doing this together. It seems that many countries over hundreds or even thousands of years have been building underground shelters.

It's wrong to just assume some type of government conspiracy and that there's also plenty of room for everyone to be saved. For all we know, when the time comes, they'll be broadcasting recorded messages that we're all in this together. I really don't want to be stuck in traffic somewhere.

I wonder how insects decide who goes into hibernation and who dies?
