or, Return of the Toynbee Tiles.

I don't want to completely re-hash the mystery of the Toynbee Tiles from square one, especially since they've already been discussed on threads here and here.

Basically, they are (probably) linoleum tiles found embedded in the asphalt in various American and South American cities. They were first reported in Philadelphia around 1983 (if not earlier). Most say some sort of variation on the same theme, usually: "TOYNBEE IDEA / IN MOVIE 2001 / RESURRECT DEAD / ON PLANET JUPITER."

Although some go off on more paranoid rants. For more detailed descriptions, theories, and pictures, you can check out the following resources:

What Is It?
Toynbee Tile Files
Resurrect Dead

The last one is the home page for a documentary made last year on the subject (which I have not seen).

Now, moving on...I stumbled across 5 vidoes on YouTube, all posted by the same user in October 2006. They are all short montages (between 30 seconds and 1:45) mixed in with captions.

The first video is of Jupiter, and the first caption is lifted straight from the Toynbee Tiles. The video also includes captions saying "Faith," "Chrysalis," and "Resurrect." Those same 3 captions also appear in the next 2 videos.

The second video is of one of Adamski's so-called UFO's and begins with the caption "They are suicides, not murdered," before moving on to the next 3.

The fourth video, instead of the Faith, Chrysalis, and Resurrect theme, reads "Submit," and then "Obey."

Now, the kicker: the second, third, and fourth videos all end with the caption: "People are being resurrected on Jupiter." Notice the use of present tense.

The fifth video doesn't exactly fit in with the other four, just says "Would you ever really want to meet an Angel?"

Now, as I'm sure most of you know, especially those of you who've been on this site longer than I have, that most conspiracy theories are variations of the same themes. However, this one, the idea that people are being resurrected on Jupiter (or anywhere, for that matter) is pretty new to me, and the only other place I've seen it is in those Toynbee Tiles.

As fun as it is to sit around and try to come up with who's behind the tiles, I'm more interested in what anyone has to say on the ideas behind it. Has anyone come across stuff like this anywhere outside of Sci Fi?

Your 2 cents would be appreciated.

Here's the YouTube videos:

What is your reasoning for this?

Jupiter is a liquid/gas planet. Most of its body is made of gas, and its core is a liquid metalic hydrogen. If people were resurrected there, they would have to learn how swim for the rest of their lives while breathing in hydrogen.

Right. Exactly my point. Seriously though, I mean, is this guy and the guy(s) associated with the tiles just sitting around one day and go "I think the dead are alive and well on Jupiter," or is this connected to anything else that's out there right now?

When it's just one guy it's easy to just pass it off on drugs/clinical paranoia/etc...but as it spreads you have to ask yourself, just where the hell are they getting this idea from?

Arnold J. Toynbee's wiki page states "Toynbee argued that "Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder."

The CityBeat article mentions "Submit and Obey" as one of the footnotes in one of the tiles.

These videos seem to be a homage of some sort to the Toynbee tiles.

As for how James Morasco, or whoever the real tiler was, connected Toynbee with the "resurrecting the dead on Jupiter" I'm still not sure about that. It seems that idea originated with the Larry King caller in 1980, who may also be the street corner prophet of Philadelphia.

I would love to see that Larry King episode and the Resurrect Dead documentary. Do you know if there's a dvd available?

The twentieth century gave us glimpses of Paradise and confirmed the certainty of Hell on Earth, but it also gave us the mysterious wonder of the Toynbee Tiles.

Alfred Toynbee penned "A Study of History" in which he posited that history is cyclical, with inevitable types of phase each recognizable by unique characteristics and dovetailing with the type of phase before and after it.

Resurrection of the dead of one world on another interplanetary world in space has been around as long as the UFO phenomenon, with mesoamerican cultures linking their "gods" (better translation: deathless, immortal, from-the-sky) with specific planets of the solar system - and stars beyond. Likewise the spiritualist craze of the nineteenth century and the theosophical version of reincarnation both maintained that rebirth can occur not simply on the Earth but on other physical worlds too. Perhaps influenced by this Edgar Rice Burroughs uses this device - astral relocation to a new physical form - in his Barsoom series. This touch of necromancy is the creepiest part of the science fantasy series.

Life death and undeath amongst the stars is of course also a staple of Lovecraft's weird horror fiction.

"America . . . now stands for what Rome stood for. Rome consistently supported the rich against the poor in all foreign communities that fell under her sway; and, since the poor, so far, have always and everywhere been far more numerous than the rich, Rome’s policy made for inequality, for injustice, and for the least happiness of the greatest number."

-Alfred Toynbee

Reincarnation of a soul on a different planet than that of its birth, often coupled with the idea of a prison planet- is a staple of both contactee aliens of the Venusian / Nordic sort and the fiction of Philip K. Dick.

Universal Oneness United

Most of us lived before here on Earth. Some have come from other planets to Earth for a human experience. Our Soul reincarnates on the physical plane again and again until it graduates from the school of Earth. By choosing different bodies and different life experiences, the Soul learns to view life from all sides. Living as male or female, as black or white, as rich or poor, straight or gay, for example, the Soul tests and purifies itself.

Phillip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series is also an example of resurrectees appearing, via alien intervention, in a new world. It is an idea with a long provenance.

TOYNBEE: learn from the cycles of history (personal history?) or repeat them uselessly.

There does come a point when you have worked through the lessons that you needed to get here on Earth and you choose not to reincarnate any more on the physical level. You may choose experiences on other planes or other planets or you may choose to stay in the Oneness of the Ancient One.

-The UOU

Alien-inspired religious reincarnation beliefs seem to overlap with the Toynbee view of history. The Tilers are trying to bridge the unbridgeable gap between materialist and spiritual paths. On public roads. Curious symbolism, the tarmac Styx with its tiled secrets in red white and blue.

There are beings here in human form that came back to this planet at this time, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. This group of people is here to help Awaken the others in remembering Oneness and Love. Sometimes these beings are called “Living Masters” or “Whole Light Beings.”

-The UOU

Whomever the original recipient of the insight in the tiles was- they were at great, compulsive pains to make this modern shamanic trip an enduring one.

lenoleum, asphalt glue (?) in several layers, then placing tar paper over it so that car wheels won't mess it up, and apparently the heat of the sun on the tar paper will bake it into the street

One last interesting note to all of this. The great alchemist Fulcanelli and others have said that a great transmutation of the human species is going to takes place at some time near the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Kubrick picked the date 2001 - which is astonishingly close to other dates prescribed by many ancient alchemists - including Nostradamus. What are we to make of the strange date that Kubrick picked out for the final transformation of the human species?

Maybe the more symmetrical year 2012 is a better fit for the great transformation than 2001 or 2010. Who knows. I can't wait until there's a Toynbee Tile on the Moon! Or even Jupiter.

I never caught that the suicide vice murder line was a direct reference to Toynbee himself, I thought it was making some oblique reference to the Adamski video it was typed over. Now it makes more sense.

Morasco talks of a Minority Association whose stated goal was to colonize Jupiter by resurrecting all of the dead that ever lived (that is, according to his interview in the Philadelphia Inquirer), so IMO if the Philly street prophet, the Larry King caller, and the Tiler are/is not Morasco himself, I would assume they are one of the (very few, presumably) members of this Association.

Speaking of the Larry King caller, David Mamet wrote a quick one-act play called 4 AM based on that exchange...

LONE NUT/STREET PROPHET
A few sources that were around in 1980's Center City Philadelphia remember a rambling, eccentric street-prophet type that would babble on about Kubrick, Toynbee, Arthur C. Clarke, and dead resurrection on Jupiter. We haven't gotten a concrete physical description of him.

Toynbee.Net webmaster Bill O'Neill received emails from folks who said this prophet, or someone like him, had shown up on Greyhound Buses with literature, and others claimed to have heard him on shortwave radio. All of these sightings date back to the 1980s - presumably before this fellow became disillusioned with his modes of communication and decided to try something new: making and glueing tiles.

Source: csolvi.htm

This lone nut / street prophet or someone very like him was in Nevada in 1989. He exited the greyhound bus and handed out bright leaflets which summarised the Toynbee Tile message. The style and art of the pamhlets was extremely similar to an online tarot deck I found. All my bookmarks were mysteriously deleted a couple of nights ago so I am now left trying to relocate the tarot, once I do I will post a link here.

article on railroad joe

The Minority Association membership seems to have been tiny at best for all these years. OR just the opposite and we are looking at the smoke from the smoke grenade and not the guy who threw it.

Also where in South America did the tiles appear? Is this another link to Morasco as Brazilian emigre?

Is this the same Railroad Joe?

The dedication ceremony was conducted on Sunday, November 17, 1963, with the honor of unveiling the monument shared by Julius Piroli of the ITAM Peters Purcell Post, John Gallagher of Lt. Fred Clark Post, American Legion, and Daniel Wassil of the Col. Elmer E. Ellsworth Post, V.F.W. Later that day, three wreaths were laid at the stone’s base by veterans’ auxiliary presidents Mrs. Viola Gooley of the American Legion, Mrs. Mary Luciano of the Italian American Veterans, and Mrs. Odelia Cimino of the VFW.

There’s just a bit more I have for you conspiracy theorists out there to get your brains bubbling. The late 80s-early 90s timeframe for the ranting tile (and our media-hating tilemaker’s move) coincides very nicely with the closing of the Byberry mental hospital. Byberry has long been a fixture in the Philadelphia region and has been an attraction for high school goth kids looking for a quick spook ever since its closing in 1990. The address, which has drawn so much attention both due to its accuracy (down to the zip code) and its incredible distance from its apparent point of origin, has some interesting connections as well. South Philly being what it is, the sale date alone on the house does nothing to set it apparent from any of the other two story masonry homes in the neighborhood. The current owner is listed as one Severino Verna. Severino Verna, Jr. was the proprietor of the Verna Funeral home on South Broad Street. “Resurrect dead,” right? Politically motivated Philadelphians will also note the Severino’s son and namesake, Severino Verna Jr. is currently the proprietor of the family business and husband to City Council President, Anna Verna.

abinka

The link between mental hospital and tiler is a little too pat, especially if there is more than one tiler. Maybe they met on a freight train when the itinerant was riding the rails and Railroad Joe was working. It's all just speculation.

What is interesting is this deuterium (D) heavy isotope of hydrogen on Jupiter. D has disappeared from the Sun as a result of nuclear reactions in the solar interior. Because no such reactions occur on Jupiter, the ratio of deuterium to hydrogen there should be identical to the ratio of those isotopes in the cloud of interstellar gas and dust that collapsed to form the solar system 4.6 billion years ago. Since deuterium was made primarily in the "big bang" that has been postulated to have begun the expansion of the universe, an accurate measurement of deuterium/hydrogen on Jupiter would allow the calibration of expansion models. An engineer named Jacco van der Worp claimed that, plunging into Jupiter’s deep and increasingly dense atmosphere, the on-board Galileo electrical power supply – a set of 144 plutonium-238 fuel pellets, arrayed in two large canister devices called “RTGs” (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators – see image and schematic, below) – would ultimately “implode”; that the plutonium Galileo carried would ultimately collapse in upon itself under the enormous pressures of Jupiter’s overwhelming atmosphere—.So maybe there was a Hiroshima & Nagasaki Jovian holocaust after all, September (that month), 2003:

And STILL the mystical symbolism of 2001: A Space Odyssey inspires analysis and visions of an apocalypse- in both the modern and ancient senses...

Hey, I don't know if this was a rhetorical question or not, since you seem pretty knowledgable on the topic, but just to catch up anyone else reading the thread:

Tiles have also been found in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Santiago. It was the tile in Santiago that gave Railroad Joe's address in Philly (listed in the tile as, "Toynbee A."). One, or both, of the other two were written in Spanish.

Now, Doghead, my question to you is: do you think 2001 is a reflection of the Tiler's philosophy, or the cause of it? What I mean is, did he watch the film after recently reading Toynbee and mashed the two together, or did he watch the film and say to himself, "Holy crap, that's what I've been saying for years!"

Does the Minority Association and the Tiler obsess over Jupiter just because it was in the film, or do they obsess over the film because it heavily referenced Jupiter?

Kubrick invested 2001 with incredible and very deliberate layers of symbolism. This is why when George Lucas was tapped to steal the dreams of a generation he very consciously stole as much of the talent from 2001 as he could.

Kubrick clearly made 2001 as a complete and perfected capstone of esoteric lore.

I think the Minority Association founders choked on their popcorn when they saw it, realising that it meshed with what they had separately discovered and reasoned out for themselves. I think it was a synchronicity that caused such a flash of understanding and power that the Tilers KNEW they no longer had any choice and that they HAD TO tell the world. Unfortunately the energy of the message was such that it burned them out.

This is like Mothman- real, but something so strange and out there that it has the power to obsess... possess... destroy...

PEOPLE ARE -NOT- BEING RESURRECTED ON JUPITER

-or anywhere else:

"EVERLASTING DEATH NEW IDEA OF HEAVEN; Founder of Cult Holds That Resurrection Is Not Necessary to Man's Future Happiness.

March 11, 1912, Monday

Page 5, 1338 words

NEW HAVEN, Conn., March 10. -- The New Religion Quarterly, the first number of which will be published here this week, advances a new theory of heaven. It holds that resurrection from the dead is not necessary to man's welfare or future happiness. Equal results may come about through everlasting death, it says, as through an individual future life."

This is a post to rattle ones brains, I loved Kubriks movie..the esoteric implications with the monoliths as calling cards remind me of This fellows calling cards..left behind for others to discover..his secret or his madness., others may have followed suit much in the same way ancient symbols and images are routinely swiped such as skull and crossbones, swastika, the owl by elitists to form societies or circles that give each other succor and support amongst themselves, and sometimes exert control over others, depending on the charisma of the leaders. The new age kabbalistt are the vogue, (you should read on their excesses on own members)as are scientologists, Raelians, (the latter dispensing with afterlife,), the common thread to all being didpensing with God and subsstituting themselves and their own psyches Godheads for the here and now..I fear groups like these are becoming more and more as Cristendom andBuddhism and even Islam, lose their ability to keep up with the changes in technology and the thedoctrine of consumerism keeps taking hold. In current economic collapses as an example, ..not one leader says pray..they say spend. Yes, a real comfort and nourishment for the soul. and we wonder why several young people hung themselves for no apparent reason..we forget that for many people ..living is a painful existence..we may call them weak,,but they are here nevertheless.
So other imagery and isms come in to fill and feed (in a very real way), the disenfranchised. Indeed, idle hands really are the devils workshop..The tiler IMO is no exception. . One cult in the usa poisoned a towns well water with salmonella, then the Japanese nihilists subway bombing with nerve gas, wanting to bring armageddon on ..manson the same, with the tate murders..and attempted threats on president..
Consdier ourselves lucky..he just tiled the roads with tile and not people.
In a very real way I am glad his para theological beliefs did not take hold.

The Toynbee Tiles are one of the strangest of the strange - a cult with no members, a central tenet disproven by its own cult leader, who leads no cult... It is so beautifully Zen it's tempting to call it the anti-Scientology- a cult you can only belong to until you realise you belong or want to belong at which point your enthusiasm and connectedness rules you out of any further contact/lack of contact.

Toynbee Tiles don't just jam culture, they jam everything. Pure distillate of psychosis. Beautiful the way cyanide crystals can look beautiful.

psychosis..yes I know its face all to well, and the shift from our world to theirs..I was popped in the head while interviewing a psychotic,at a hospital intake, a paranoid schiz picked up a bedroom nightstand and threw it at me..the same then picked it up an threw it at the window..and momentary sanity must have taken hold..he escaped. captured unconscious later having run and tripped into a road ditch in the middle of the night.Anyone who lives with one, let alone work with them, has my utmost sympathy. Their ideations are beyond bizarre, and they can be very convincing..I agree..its a distillate..an absynthe liqueur even....(I hear they have legalized a form of that)..but in their madness..they can be creative as with the tile..like art..like graffittii..and quite acceptible..and like the rap artists blings and tatoos....quite fashionable. I am somebody..I am a part of something..I am not invisible. this tile is my mark..my legacy...these things tell us..Perhaps it is from streaks and the freaks of madness..a break from the mold, the road less traveled, that that is the essence and assymetric nature of creativity within the brain, and like life..seeks to embed itself in our reality and innovate as well as replicate, or like strings on a guitar..when one is plucked the closest resonate without plucking..and when the monsters rage without..those racial memories in our genes.. seem to awaken also.
