Oh man, this is new as in MOON.
Late night news is doing it now. Bat guano. And I thought Oprah's couch was psycho. Note to self: If I ever become fantastically famous and rich (can you say NEVER), please don't let me believe I can somehow make my own religion. Or at least never go on national tv looking like charley mansons little cousin exclaiming it.

If he only had the nose braids like Travolta in 'Battleship Earth' I'd be hooked line and sinker. No nose braids, no capeesh.

Apparently.

If you guys want to bash TC, could you do it in another thread? Thanks.

This is worth digging into a little more, but I'm having a difficult time searching for news on this OTW. Has anyone else had better luck? There was an attempt to derail this thread, but it was unsuccessful. Thanks, MOD for getting it back in line.....how can we find out more about the possible signal picked up? And does it tie into the "Wow!" signal of 1977?

If there was any peculiar signal you'd probably read about it here first.

If Hello123456's signal is an actual ET hit, I'll buying each of you a beer!

If this KTUV article is referring to the Life's Ingredients Detected In Far Off Galaxy article, then that's sad journalism indeed.

The KTVU story was so garbled and confused, I can't take it seriously. I see nothing like this on any of the serious space or science news sites. Looks tpo me like they put the bosses nephew on the science beat.

Either that, or someone wants a laughter curtain brought down around SETI.

Here is a brief discussion of this report by a blogging scientist

Wasn't there a thread in the 'Hot Topics' recently, regarding an ATS member having discovered a possible signal while running the SETI screensaver?

I wonder if that 'signal' was in anyway related to the one picked up in Puerto Rico?

Will S.E.T.I. actually release the signal to the general public? If they did need help solving the transmission that would probably be the best way of doing so. I fear the govt. would swoop in and take over before they get a chance to do so.

Guys, watch the video on the San Fran news site where this story originated from:

www.ktvu.com...

The video makes it look like this is all theoretical and on the other hand factual. Seems to contradict itself. Strange, or just bad journalism

Well said, BottomLine.

I find it puzzling, to put it very mildly and politely, how "self-evident" it seems to so many people that a different species or order or whatever (hypothetical or not) would absolutely have to think, look and react the way "we" do.
(And, of course... even "we" don't! But people are even judged, in courts of law, on the basis of stereotyped behavioural expectations.)

And then, to top it all, they go and call themselves "scientists"...

The article is gone now from the news website the story originated from. it says:

www.ktvu.com...

The story you are trying to view is no longer available through this Web site.

I called SETI and they say they have no signal but a possible signal. They have to sort through a bunch of data. That article isn't true according to what they told me over the phone.

fishy the station deleted their own story just like that.....

you can still read about it here though: www.shortnews.com...

also odd that they don't mention it on SETI and the SETI-at-home sites with one word...........

I agree. If it's a false story, then they should at least post that on their site.

just look at this quote from the other news site:

"Dan Wertheimer, of UC Berkeley SETI, said that the signal may never be decoded leaving them stumped as to how to respond. "We'll know something's out there, but we won't know much about their civilization."

It looks to me like the seti guy confirms he thinks its an ET signal, and not one word on their site...... and the news story including video news just deleted? fishy..
