Its very difficult to take a flattering picture of someone who is speaking. Though not a journalist by trade, I've done enough reporting and
photography to know this pretty well.
The trick is to snap many pictures in rapid succession, because eventually you will catch them on a syllable that tightens rather than opens the
mouth, and there's a reasonable chance that they will look like they are speaking with charisma in that picture.
When you catch them with their mouth open, they look hesitant, or like they are screaming like children.
The problem is when you get somebody who really puckers up and exaggerates the closed-mouth syllables, like George Bush. it makes them look like they
are choking on their words. When somebody does that it's best to snap pictures when they pause... unless you don't like them.
I'm sure the media knows this, but there is a demand for pictures that make people look stupid.
