(01-07) 11:06 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

Two U.S. Navy fighter jets plunged into the Persian Gulf Monday, after what initial reports suggest was a mid-air collision, a defense official said.

All three pilots ejected safely from the planes and were headed back to the USS Harry Truman, the aircraft carrier they were operating from, according to the official, who requested anonymity because the information was preliminary and not yet released publicly. No other details or the crash were released.

One of the F-18 jets that crashed held two pilots, the other held just one.

The crash occurred at about 1 p.m. EST.

I'll update this thread with links and further details as they are made available.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CNN mentioned that the two aircraft went down during night-time operations, but that was pretty much the extent of "further details".
While it could very well be nothing more than an unfortunate incident, I couldn't help but think to the alleged Iranian provocation in the Strait of Hormuz that's headlining at the moment.
more to come as the story unfolds.
F-15`s CANNOT operate from a carrier
Could be just that, and I too am thankful for the safety of the 3 crew members, BUT...
Blur the lines a bit and the possibilities broaden greatly. no?
I bet it is those I-RAN-ians!
I mean - TWO military incidents at one close straight in Persian Gulf in 24 hours?
Smells fishy...
Out of interest do you think they will have to recover the airframes? Surely we don’t want the Iranians getting their hands on them!
Not unless there is a covert war to fund, and hostages to spring to buy an election...
In that case, the usual gift when doing the deal is a cake and a bible.
OK, who is going to pay for the lost of billions of dollars on those air planes.
I guess they should give the tab to the pilots.
BTW I am glad they are fine and no lost of life from the incident.
Billions no, About 120 million yes. Night carrier ops are very dangerous and this is what happens with one bad move, My bet would be they were holding for an air tanker and got to close.
My mistake, I thought that with all the sophisticated technology inside the F-18s it will amount to that much money.
Its not like the F/A 18 hornets are something new. Im sure the iranians, chinese, russian already know a lot about this plane. Its been exported and sold to a lot of countries so it makes it easier to spy on.
America loses 2 planes without a shot being fired!...
WOW!
How do you think America will cope if they came up against a modern air force?
America always fights 3rd world countries.
I heard the slavs shot down a b2 stealth bomber and they used microwave ovens to trick American radars.
I don't like Iran
