Defectors, 'recruiting problem' plague the Taliban: ISAF
Allison Lampert, CanWest News Service
Published: Sunday, December 30, 2007
KANDAHAR AIR FIELD, Afghanistan -- Taliban insurgents are depending more on foreign fighters because of increased difficulties recruiting locals, Canadian Brig.-Gen. Marquis Hainse said Sunday.

Coalition forces have observed a greater number of Arabs and other foreign nationals among the insurgents killed recently during battles in Afghanistan's southern provinces said Hainse, ISAF's deputy commander at its Regional Command South.

Just out of interest, do these fighters they've killed habitually carry their passports with them? I'm having some difficulty working out how they know they're foreign fighters.

and another question i've always had.
the news always calls the insurgents "arabs and other foriegn fighters".
1. aren't they all arabs? (discounting some african- looking and oriental-
looking foriegn fighters).

i assume they can tell if they are foriegn or not is by their pronunciation
of language. my michigan "sound" would be different than an "arkansas"
sound. i think probably, the "allies" have locals working with them for
identification purposes.

Well here in the uk we refer to afghans and pakistanis as asians, 'arabs' is generally reserved for those peoples originating from the area around Saudi (UAE, Yemen, SA, Qatar etc). The language thing might be more of a clue but I was under the impression these fighters were dead.

Yeah, same here about the dead part.

Maybe there is some sort of International Fingerprint Database in use by the military and others. Use it to track anyone just about, including foreign fighters. Or there is the chance that the Taliban also used to or do keep a database of their own that NATO got ahold of.

Common people use your noggins. Its based on who they catch alive and thats how they know who is from where. We need to get out of that area of the world and send a message that any attacks on the U.S. will bring a devastating nuclear response and be done with it.

Thank you Sky watcher, I agree. The last time I voiced such an opinion a member put me on their foe list.

What is the sense in having our men and women killed every day while serving in several hot spots in the world? Those people have been fighting for centuries and we are not going to change that by joining in combat on their level.

Two well placed bombs stopped WW2. Why continue pointless blood letting?

I would prefer if we were to keep with the topic of the article and it's contents, as I stated in the first post.
