Asteroid May Hit Mars Next Month

news.yahoo.com

LOS ANGELES - Mars could be in for an asteroid hit. A newly discovered hunk of space rock has a 1 in 75 chance of slamming into the Red Planet on Jan. 30, scientists said Thursday.
\"These odds are extremely unusual. We frequently work with really long odds when we track ... threatening asteroids,\" said Steve Chesley, an astronomer with the Near Earth Object Program at NASA\'s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The asteroid, known as 2007 WD5, was discovered in late November and is similar in size to an object that hit remote central Siberia in 1908, unleashing energy equivalent to a 15-megaton nuclear bomb and wiping out 60 million trees.

Maybe a large impact like this would unearth something from a previous civilization that would be hard to cover-up. If not, it will be really cool to watch!

It will not unearth anything.
Much, much more likely will be destruction in a very similar manner to the way Mars almost certainly lost it's atmosphere & life previously, and obtained the Line of Dichotomy at the same time, albeit on a smaller scale as this object is Tunguska sized (assuming Tunguska was an Asteroid/Comet of course, which I do not accept)
Massive Asteroid/Comet impact.
Mars got slammed - hard = 3 times.
Makes me think the inhabitants may well have attempted to divert.

And failed.

It'd destroy anything that is unearthed and we wouldn't see anything, not that there is anything there.

And yeh, cool to watch hopefully.

I seen this news story yesterday. I almost wanted to start a thread about it. If you read the story, the roid was only found the later part of 2007.

The roid was only found later 2007, and it is going to fly real close if not fall upon Mars over the next month.

Basic understanding of the solarsystem would alow for people who would think about it to understand how "close to home" this roid and roid even really is.

People are all like "the world's not ending", all the time, yet modern day science is only finding roids within our inner planets with few then a couple of months warning?

Think about it.

Hopefully I hope it does hit, but only time will tell.

Those are long odds, even if they aren't as "astronomical" as scientists are accustomed to dealing with in these matters.

Some may remember when the comet hit Jupiter. Of course, Jupiter is large, gaseous, and a really long way away.

The "Odds" depend upon the Pot. If people's chances to hit the PowerBall Lotto were 75/1, well, who wouldn't play it then? People all the time play that lotto and the odds are hundreds of millions to one.

So, I disagree that the odds are a long shot when you're talking about a world changing event like that. Besides, and also, the odds are only a calculation.

If the odds for winning the lottery was 75/1, the cut would be about 65 cents. You know what they say about state-run lotteries. They're a tax on the mathematically challenged.

What world?

While speculation is fun, we're all just going to have to wait and see what happens.
