Mystery beast kills animals in N.C.

news.yahoo.com

BOLIVIA, N.C. - An unknown predator mauled a pit bull and killed two puppies in Brunswick County, and residents fear it's the same animal that killed three dogs in September. No one has reported ever seeing the animal.

I know no more details than those provided here, so I can't be sure this was the death of some vicious dog or not. But I would like to point out that while I have two pit bulls, and they are territorial, they are far from being "killers".

Please don't put all of a breed into a single category. Dogs are as varied as their owners and the environment they grow up in, much like humans.

Needless to say, I would trust my dogs to be loyal much more than humans. And it is loyalty that counts, not opposable thumbs.

i agree NGC, i shouldn't put all of a breed in a single category. but, the single category of pit bulls seem to compromise the bulk of the mauling/killing human reports.

i agree with nurture over nature. however, do you feel there is an inherantly excessive violent behavior pattern with pit bulls that, given your absence during a specific instance, would overwhelm their learned behavior?

i am not educated in the intricacies of dog breeding. how did the pit bull breed come to be? was it bread for a specific purpose? if so, how does it differ from the breeds from which it came?

they are bread for hunting boar mostly or your less humane things like michel vick would do. their rage in not part of the breed its a learned trait. mine is very timid and loving as much so as my lab is.

who knows could have been a bear that killed it. i didnt read the whole article though.

i live in wilmington, north carolina and have been following up of the mystery animal and have talked to wildlife services.
before hearing anything at all about this situation a friend and i had just gotten off work and couldn't sleep so we decided to head out for the beach to watch the sun come up (we get off work around 3-sh and were completely sober and wide awake). i cant remember the exact date but it was a weekday and about 2 1/2 weeks ago from today.
we take the right off of oleander to get to the beach and out of a bunch of trees this HUGE animal just out of the bushes on the left makes it across all THRE LANES IN 2 BOUNDS! and ran down a trail on the right side into a bunch of trees. here are the details of the animal and the surroundings:

Body: running on all fours, big enough to stretch across a whole traffic lane and then some, bulky in the front and smaller in the back (almost heyena like but its main features were exactly like a wolf), in all its size (L,W,H) would honestly be most comparable to my car which is a mini cooper.

Fur: about 6in. long give or take an inch and was very very thick and actually really flowy and shiny, almost like human hair, and was black with grey/silver mixed in. not at all matted or dirty like wild animal fur. i cannot say whether or not it had a tail, if it did it wasn't obvious.

Eyes: my headlights were directly on it and the eyes did NOT reflect like most animals. they were actually a very bright yellow in color (really close to the smiley face yellow).

the surroundings: 6AM, almost sunrise, noone else driving on the road or walking anywhere nearby. warm and crystal clear night. still completly dark except for a tiny line of pink were the sun was waiting to come up. a few street lamps. 5 minutes to the beach. my friend and i were driving by a small strip mall with a gated nieghborhood right before it. there were thick trees on the left and right sides right before the thick brick wall around the houses and a small trail on the right into the woods. plenty of places to hide and to make a clean get away if needed.

this whole event lasted maybe 35 sec. it ran so fast it almost seemed like its feet weren't even touching the ground, but my headlights were straight on it and we saw the animal clearly. it didn't pay attention to us at all, it was def. in a hurry to get somewhere.
after the sun came up we parked and walked up the road to the trail it ran down and looked for anything like fur, etc. and we took a cell phone pic. of a the only thing it left behind which was a 3 toed footprint in the sand which was bigger then my hand stretched out. one of the news articles on the wilmington star news website had a picture of a pawprint taken at one the scenes that matched the one i found perfectly, even in size.
only later did i get home and check for any strange things in the news for the area and came across the bolivia articles. i tried calling wildlife services and after being passed around i finally talked to someone who told me the animal was 3 different things and then asked if he could meet me to talk about it. i never called him back tho because they were acting strangley about it and sounded like what they did know about the animal wasn't much more then the next guy.
it wasn't a coyote, wolf (not even a timber wolf), dog, bear, deer, etc. it did most resemble a wolf, as far as the head and legs, but everything else just had something off about it. im hoping to be a cryptozoologist one day so it really was one of the greatest sights ive ever seen, ive still been looking for it at night as much as i can, but nothing else so far. ill keep everyone posted tho. but i would really love some feed back on what you guys think!

Great story Seethru..

The creature you saw, could it be similar to one of the famed 'Big Cats' we here about from time to time? Probably not with the fur being so long, but thought I would throw it out there anyways.

Back to the dead dogs, does the report mention bite marks? if so do they speculate what they resemble?

def not a big cat, they were saying cats were a poss. but recently they decided the footprints were some kind of wolf. the prints didn't look cat-like at all anyway. its head was a straight up wolfs head.
and how the animals have died is really bizarre too and just makes how sketchy all the wildlife and PDs are acting even wierder.
in one of the newspaper articles it says that all the animals are found in the morning without a scratch on them surrounded by the big animal footprints. they said they died due to a massive blow to the head, probably from a large paw and noone even heard a sound. no barking or whining, one guy thought he heard one single tiny yelp, but other then that not a sound, they didn't even see it coming. but seriously, what animal besides maybe a bear (which it most def was not) could kill a PIT BULL with nothing else other then hitting it in the head with its paw! oh pa-leaze. the whole thing has a ton of info thats being leftout by officials. not to mention the fact the animal my friend and i saw matches every werewolf discription ive been able to come across almost perfectly. particularly bray road beast.

thanks so much for the info on your sighting as well as your insight into the local reports of the 'beast'!

the description of the dead animals is intriguing!

do you think there is a way to set up some sort of 'camera trap' (a motion activated camera)?

In December of 2006 My wife and I were living at Ocean Isle Beach, NC (just about 40 miles south of Wilmington and 15miles south of Bolivia) and around 4:30 am one morning my dog woke me up - in need of a trip outside for the bathroom. I put on my clothes and escorted her down the stairs outside. While I stood there smoking, staring into the ground and waiting for her to handle her business, I looked up across the street (maybe 40 yards away) and crouched/sitting there on hind legs, was what I called a chupacabra. At least that was the closest thing I had ever seen or heard described to match the description.

This thing, if it stood up would have been about 4 or 4 1/2 feet tall. It had dog or wolf type legs that were proportional to it's size and it had smaller, disproportionate arms that didn't seem to match it's body (in the same way a T-rex's arms don't match it's body). It's body was pitch black and it had strange hair only on it's back. The hair was almost like spikes or very big quills. And what appeared to be bat-type wings. It's eyes were red and they fixed on me at the same time i fixed on it. It was in that crouching position as if it were eating something on the ground and it stopped and looked up from the ground and stared at me for about 5 seconds as I stared back.

Then, suddenly, it moved faster than I have ever seen any animal move. It dashed in a blur - like a horror film being fast forwarded - about 100 yards away, and stopped, looked at me again and then dashed out of sight.

I told my wife and aunt & uncle about this experience the next morning and they thought I was crazy and just making up stories - they were very dismissive about the whole thing. I even asked the Ocean Isle PD about any other sightings of strange creatures. They thought I was the strange creature.

However, the following nite at around 5am my aunt decided to step out on the deck for her morning coffee and cigarette...and she saw the exact same creature I did. She claimed it moved the same way as what I had described.
She was petrified, and no longer made fun of me.

To me , the is only one plausible answer to these weird creatures.
I believe that area 51 is home to many genetic experiments. I think these creatures are made there and transported to certain areas of the world.
The time may come when these creatures attack humans. It happened in the antideluvian period because of genetic manipulation. And Jesus said, as in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the coming of the son of man. cantyousee

Fascinating.

Genetic engineering could explain the appearance of the most recent "creatures" that people are seeing. And I believe what folks are saying about them.

Here's the rub....how to explain Big Foot and Yeti of the Himalayas who's appearances predate DNA manipulation?

Maybe some answers to these weird sightings are just around the corner.

I think, until more evidence arises, that we should speculate as to what it could be. While the alien hybrids are all very interesting, I think there may be a more simple explanation.

Bolivia seems to be in a very forested area. If this is so, then it could very easily have been a bear that slipped out, and when attacked, defended itself. Either that, or it could have been either a badger or wolverine. The possibilities are very broad.

Again, until we see a picture and know for sure, this, to me anyway, is a simple matter of a wild dog getting his tail handed to him by a wilder forest creature.

While driving through a wooded area early in the dark hours of the morning I spotted a large animal that appeared to be in the shape of a cat. It darted out across the road in front of me and I started bracing for an impact. I was a bit surprised at the speed of the animal. I didn't hit it. This was in western South Carolina several months ago. In terms of size maybe it was close to the size of a full grown panther. It was definitely bigger than any dog I've seen but it appeared cat like in shape. Maybe I saw something different. I never saw it again even though I spotted the animal only a few miles from my house.

Wasn't John Edwards from S.C.?

Did the beast have Breck hair?

Seriously, tho, I was watching one of those animal cop shows last week, and there was a case where 2 American bulldogs killed a decent sized pit bull. They're not invincible. A bear could easily kill a pit with one paw swipe.

I was reading last night about Hopi prophecy (here on ATS) and one thing that was included was an assertion that "there will be animals not seen for many years roaming the land, again".

Spooooky! Camping, anyone?

On the other hand, I'm in Florida (North Florida) for the winter, and my friends here tell me that I really have to watch out for bears these days. When I left here 7 years ago, bears were not a problem. A lot of development has happened around here in the mean time, and they are pressed for habitat. It wasn't unheard of to see a starving Florida panther walking down the highway median around Miami, on the other hand.

If there was no scratch on the dogs....they were just knocked on the head--what was the purpose of killing them? Bad mood?? To shut them up?? Kill them and NOT eat them??

Curiouser and curiouser...
