I've never used the ignore function here, but I've *plonked* one or two people in my time. Ignore functions have a long, proud history in discussions over the internet.

Whether or not a person uses it is their own personal choice, and I think it's always better to have a choice than not.

god bless ignore buttons. some people just like to instigate arguments, then abandon them. it becomes a pattern, and ignore buttons become very useful.

I can see what you mean when a troll comes in and offers nothing to a thread or calls you everything in the book that they can get away with. It would be nice to have a knockout button for some I've come across. But I still refuse to use the ignore button. I'm gonna read every post in my thread whether it's ignorant, stupid or offensive. I guess that's me though. Thanks for all the reasons you all posted here for having or not having an ignore button I appreciate it.

in defense of the ignore button:

we all say "deny ignorance!"

well, for me - denying ignorance means putting an ignorant person on ignore, therefore denying their ignorant comments.

Perhaps the ignore button can be used to ignore ignorant users? Just a thought...

I too do not use the ignore button. You never know when the person could have an epiphany and suddenly "get it". You would miss the joy of seeing a mind bloom right before your eyes.

Now there are people I should ignore. The ones who restate the same thing over and over and over. They never seem able to grasp anything except what they have fixated on in the first place.

I have stated that I was going to ignore someone, but I meant it in the old school way, as in that I would no longer respond to their BS.

Maybe we could get SO to put in a way to have a little black "X" come onto the avatar area each time someone put you on ignore. That way you wouldn't know who was ignoring you, unless they said so, but the more "Xs" you had, the more you would know people were getting fed up with your crap. A big hint for those too slow to see that they were driveling.

With all due respect, you can't make a person see the Truth.

Naw, most of the people I have placed on ignore have been full of complete rubbish.

Another name for the "ignore button" would be the "easy button". There are only two choices, deny ignorance by confronting it or... ignore it. I choose to engage debate and have never used, nor will I ever use, the glorious illustrious ignore button. It's like saying "I give up !" and I don't do that.

If you feel the need to use the ignore button, you should consider the thought that this person is actually saying something you need to hear. You will never truly grow if you stay in your safe zone.

Yea, members will annoy you, chaff your sensitive skin and downright give you the red arse. That doesn't mean you should ignore them.

They may not be the demons you imagine, but angels sent to set you free.

In three years on this site I have never used the ignore button once. If I cannot refute what someone has to say, I have a responsibility to listen to them.

I will never grow if I do not.

For those of you who have never put anyone on your ignore list, I submit that you haven't encountered the right person to do it to here yet. There was one guy who all but called me "gay" just because I have some "new age" tendencies. I don't have time for such absurdity and ignorance, I placed him on my ignore list with the quickness. I have about five persons on my ignore list.. I won't name them because they have a fairly decent idea of who they are, that's all that is important.

You have new age ideas?????

I've written stories and put forth grand thoughts on the new age....I've been published both online and in magazines in the real world on my new age ideas.

The results have been mixed. I've been called a moron and I've had people cry when they read what I write.

That doesn't matter though.

I say what I need to say. In the end it is up to the reader to accept or deny the message. I have no control over that. I have no desire to have control over that.

I'm not here to teach or preach, but to share what I've learned.

I will never put another member of this board on ignore, for I know I still have much to learn.

To put someone on ignore is to deny yourself of the message you probably most need to hear.

Just my thoughts,

This is an electronic medium. It's not like they can get up and punch you in the nose when they get upset over what you post. All they can do is hurl a few insults.

I don't much mind the insults, though from time to time I hurl a few back at them. (I'm ashamed *head bowed*) I just remember what my old Pappy used to say: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me."

Well, I'm not one of these people who beleve in crystal therapy and unicorns and such, but many of my beliefs would be labeled "new age," yes.

I have a strong bent towards Christian Gnosticism, reincarnation, ascendency, at least spiritual ascendency, in 2012, et ceterera...

I have been called;

insane
stupid
gayhater
fundimentalist wacko
dumb
judjmental

and some worse things.. I still won't back down, give up, nor give in. The ignore button is there to show you that you can do it... you can choose to stand and fight for your right to speak in the face of harsh words. If you believe in what it is you say... you have nothing to fear.

At first, I vowed never to use it....but, my list is full up and suffers from regular updating because some people are immature and really like acting the idoit on this site.

Especially those who post blinded theories, make no sense and then accuse you of being a member of the CIA cause you proved them wrong. Or, being called a Zionist for pointing out that not all Israeli's support their government and are not to blame for everything in the world
And stalkers too...yeah, sounds crazy, but you will get a member who follows you and attacks every single thread you post in.

In other words, the ignore feature is a great thing
