Looks like an incomplete runway, or a large tower

what i first noticed was near the bottom, kinda looks like some kind of marker over something, and kind of the top too

then when i looked at it later it looked like it could be a runway too

Check out the shadows and you can clearly see the tower.

Maybe its some sort of radio transmitter or something.
Or it could be intercepting signals from somewhere else...

It looks like a tower to me for sure. I don't know what it's significance is though, any ideas?

I think a runway maybe or tower but it certainly does look out of place.
But hey with those guys anythings possible . . . it could just be their new
Burger King!

To me it looks like they are or have launched something from Area 51? it actually looks like one of the old saturn 5 launch pads but i cant find a birds eye picture of one to post but it does look like area 51 is going ballistic for something?.

Hello OSSky,

This might sound crazy but it could be a solar tower the water or who knows what could be under ground to be the cooling aspect of the tower.

Here is a video of what a solar tower is and could do........

can anyone tell how big the tower in the pic is?

I just recently saw a program on discovery about the solar towers and the sourrunding glas would need a much larger area, then the small round shape on the photograph.

As interesting as those solar tower 'prototypes' (so far, since they're having a hard time becoming a mainstream power generation method) I can't see the significance of building one in Area 51.

I don't mean to take a shot at you, I just wonder why you thought they'd construct something like this. They are generally quite large and produce a lot of power, they also usually need a lot of flat space around them to pull air upwards without interference. I don't know whether Area 51 has the suitable conditions for a structure of this type and I wonder why on Earth they would want such a 'fragile' system of power generation for a facility that is (seemingly) already well-powered.

Just my thoughts on that idea.

Hi Duality,

It was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the pic and well the gov can always find a use for a butt-load of power but I just thought I would toss the idea out.

I don't know much about solar towers but if you don't need to use glass or water for it to operate well I'm not sure but Nevada sure looks like a good place to put it.

Who ever came up with the idea of a solar tower is a genius........

it appears to be a ULF Comms tower that is 150 feet + in height.

whats curious is the segmented shadow "spots" where the sun appears to be passing through holes on the corner of the tower along the length of the vertical axis of the tower ? Part of the structural support design ? Critical to the function of the system ? Just a quirky design thought up by the engineers ?

ULF antennas tend to be wire, not towers. Figuring on a half wave antenna, 160ft would be around 3MHz. But if you look at my photograph of the tower, you can see it doesn't look like a transmitting tower. To the best of my knowledge, the new tower at Groom Lake showed up in the summer of 2005.

This page has photos of the Navy LF site plus who knows what. The Navy frequency is around 159khz, not ULF.
