You are correct about viruses. They do not display the basic functions of life, they are organic, but organic does not equal life.

However; the notion that we found a way to defeat them through evolution is slightly flawed. If the virus destroyed an entire population before becoming extinct, then we would have no inherited immunities.

Also, the inherited immunities, may not be a part of our global genetics (the ancestors of the survivors may have a limited impact on the genetics of our global population), or may have been lost over time.
