But....my SO (significant other) doesn't believe in grounding, etc

Aaaaaah...Now we see where's the real issue lol...
Show 'em who's wearing the pants (just kidding)

Seriously, there's not much we can do if you're women don't believe in grounding or other teaching method, but you should try to talk her in it, make her understand it really is needed, that it's not too late for her 17 years son, and that IT could turn out really bad if he doesn't get this one really important little life-lesson.

Just my opinion, again..

That brings up another good point. Who paid for the $150 headphones that aren't being used? Or the Computer? etc.? Maybe he did, but I doubt it. Earning what you have usually means learning how to function in society enough to hold a job.

(Minus the Step Dad years, thank god!!)My Mother raised both my sister and me on her own. I took a summer job at 15 working construction under the table to avoid legalities. 16 I worked part time after school and kept that job all through High School. I had to if I wanted the Extra toys, a car, stereos, computers, etc. It's funny cause I remember many of my friends parents or other people viewing my situation as somewhat pitiful or unfortunate, and assumed I'd grow up to be some low-life "prisoner in training". As it turned out though I was one of the few who understood the harsh reality of Life and Surviving in it. While most of the "Better Folks Kids" pissed away their college years, crashed a variety of cars that mom and dad kicked down, had trouble holding a job, paying bills, and so on......Ironic isn't it?!?!

My Mom gave me everything I needed. Love, Support, Food, Shelter, Extra's when possible, and an honest and truthful foundation from which I could stand on my own in a world that loves to beat ya down if it can. Then to add one more bonus, most of those little ingrates and their parents can't stand to be around each other for more than 10 min. without fighting. While I can associate with my family and we all get along great, as a considerate, family unit who understands each other in real terms as people should.

Edit: BTW, Netstorm, don't take this as me bashing on your parenting and stuff. I'm really just ranting in general. I don't want to imply that I have any clue about your family or anything of that nature, cause I don't. For me to judge your parenting or family structure would be very arrogant and inconsiderate of me since I don't know anything about you. Just FYI so you don't think I'm preaching to ya!!

Excellent post mOjOm. And it is so true.

Kids that gets everything handed on a silver plate don't learn NOTHING! They will be used to have everything handed to them, and when they'll have to get something by them-selve, they'll be stuck and won't know what to do. Well, they'll usually beg...

I also learned the value of money in a similar way you did. Hell, as soon as I started working (15 y.o. too), I started buying my self my own clothes and my own stuff in general. By that time I was kind of jealous of all the other kids whose parents would buy them anything...
But thinking back, I'm no that disapointed that I learned this way.
