Fascinating! In Thailand they've started using waste cooking oil to power police cars:
Used cooking oil fuels Thai crimefighters
Thailand's police are turning to used cooking oil as they seek cheaper and more environmentally-friendly fuels in the face of soaring oil
prices, they said Wednesday.
Police budgets have been hit hard by oil prices of more than 90 dollars a barrel, forcing them to tap alternative sources such as biodiesel made from
old cooking oil donated by hotels, fast food shops and even shrines.
"The purpose of this project is in response to the King urging us to use biodiesel, save the budget, reduce pollution," Lieutenant Colonel Tepvisit
Potigengrid, deputy commander of Bangkok's Bangrak district, told AFP.

There are actually so many alternatives out there that if they were all used in place of petroleum, there'd actually be a positive change in the
world. But greed seems to trump practicality.
On the positive side, greed won't last long -- the alternatives will be seen as more viable as shown by the move by Thai police.
