Well, let's see. What about financial records? Is a transaction fully protected from the instant you swipe your credit card until the bill is paid and the debt recorded as satisfied? We have SSL, S-HTTP, etc.

But what if a hacker manages to compromise your server?



The problem with encrypted online communications is not just the potential for plaintext to be intercepted at a compromised server (although this is a real possibility)

Many online transactions using "strong" encryption also use a "key escrow" scheme, which basically allows for a back door into private communications.
