I have a son, though not officially labeled as autistic, who has many, many autistic tendencies. Aside from the autistic features, he cannot speak,
has limited strength when walking, is not toilet trained, is epileptic, and does not know how to feed himself properly. I have researched the topic
of autism a great deal in the almost 10 years since his birth and I believe a big factor is actually that many more doctors and specialists are
diagnosing more and more children with this.
I believe that in the past many children may have gone undiagnosed or had the autistic qualities attributed to other issues. Over time, the trend has
gone the other way. In other words, the rate of diagnosis has actually increased rather than just the rate of occurrence. Again, this is just my
personal opinion but I do know I have read about this as a factor in the media.
