As Climate Shifts, Antarctic Ice Sheet Is Growing

www.commondreams.org

As glaciers from Greenland to Kilimanjaro recede at record rates, the central icecap of Antarctica has been steadily growing for 11 years, partially offsetting the rise in seas from the melt waters of global warming, researchers said Thursday.

The vast East Antarctic Ice Sheet — a 2-mile-thick wasteland larger than Australia, drier than the Sahara and as cold as a Martian spring — increased in mass every year from 1992 to 2003 because of additional annual snowfall, an analysis of satellite radar measurements showed.

"It is an effect that has been predicted as a likely result of climate change," said David Vaughan, an independent expert on the ice sheets at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge, England.

Could this, if true, just be Earth taking care of herself in HER way? Perhaps she knows a thing our two about taking care of her own?

OK so just about to shoot myself in the foot:

If the ice at the north pole is melting and the ice at the south pole is growing could the planet flip slightly? pole shift by natural means!

Anyway just a quick thought probably stoopid but had to mention it anyway.

Something is going to happen around 2008 - 2012 those crazy Mayans where in the know!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most recent study (2006) actually shows that antarctica appears to be losing mass overall.

Regions are gaining mass due to increased precipitation caused by warming, others are losing mass. And, overall, it appears that loss is greater than gain.

Did they find that hole down there where all the Nazis went to after the
World War?

Guess not.

Guess Forestall died for something.

He would have looked foolish if his memoirs were written by Nazis that
wanted to say Operation High Jump found Martians with Nuclear devices
down there instead of Nazis.

Who knows what those idiots will think up next.

Up for Antarctic science.

At the same time we have the UN Secretary saying Global warming is an emergency today.

Its hard to know who to trust these days, isnt it? Personally Im going to go with natural change since all the planets in the solar system is heating up.

They're not. Uranus is actually cooling.

This actually makes sense. What a lot of people don't understand (or maybe I should say they just haven't ever thought about it) is that an iceberg/ice sheet is the FRESH WATER from the ocean. In other words, you can view ice formation in the ocean as a fairly efficient desalination process, because only the FRESH water freezes leaving behind the salt.

Now, if the salinity of the ocean is decreasing, then there would be a higher volume of fresh water to form ice sheets (i.e. a decreased salt content)...so, it kind of makes sense.

Interesting stuff.

I'm with you on it being nothing more than a natural process. It is indeed hard to choose who to believe on these issues.

On one hand, you have well respected scientists saying that we are to blame for global warming. On another, you have well respected scientists saying it's just a natural process. On yet ANOTHER hand, you have well respected scientists saying that the whole IDEA of global warming is complete and total bunk.

I think it's both -- natural process AND human induced. To think of it in terms of black and white is really being simplistic. Climate is far from simple -- there are too many variables.

Yeah. At least its nice to see that scientists have different opinions about it. Most of the mainstream media have picked one view and is sticking to it, it seems...

You may be closer to the "truth" than most.

Perhaps looking at the issue as being as complex as it is may actually HELP the cause for ALL involved.

I am in the camp that all the global warming alarmists are just a part and parcel of the NWO........THEY MUST keep us in fear of 'something'......fear ot TERROR fear of GLOBAL WARMING fear of fear itself.........

A fearful population is a population EASILY CONTROLLED.
