My family ownes over 3,000 acres. Currently we are trying to come up with business ideas to begin a family business. We have about 300 of those acres to begin using now for the business but will eventually will be able to utilize the rest. For now we just want to focus on the 300 acres. We have been kicking around ideas (summer camp, concert venue, dude ranch) but haven't really stuck with anything.

Please help me come up with more ideas to bring up at our next family meeting next saturday. Keep in mind that this land is located in Texas and is in a very rural area.

Thanks in advance!

I WAS going to suggest opening a restaurant. (Thats been a dream of mine for some time now.) A barbeque restaurant since its Texas. Then I got the rural part.
But if you do barbeque good, and do it right, it don't matter how rural ya'll are; word will get around.

Is it in woods, or is it very open, flat land? Anything like a river or pond? Some of these features might help myself and others come up with ideas. If it was wooded, I would go with a camp type thing. Sleep away or "family style" if you wish.

I'd focus on the barbeque thing, unless your really out there in the boondocks. Thats my opinion though.

*What about a farm of some kind? Farms are cool, too.

OK, here it is.

You know how the lots that sell punkins, are the same lots that sell Chritmas trees... but there is some time when the lot isnt used in between them... and whats in between them... ThanksGiving... thats right... soulution....

Hunt you own turkey! Chop his head off with an axe, shoot him with a circa 1600 musket rifle, or just chase him with a Machete! Anything goes...

Its flawless!

I expect a 3.45% cut of the profits...

Good ideas guys... keep em comin.

jtb: About the restraunt... i think you really have to have a passion for that and I don't think we do. Also, in Texas the BBQ thing is done to death. The acreage is being cleared of all cedars as we speak. There are some trees, a creek, three tanks on the 300 hundred acres. On the other there are many more tanks, a lake and very brushy. We have flat areas and rolling hills. What kind of farm. please tell me more.

hemi: well, there is a place that is closer to the city than us. we are about two hours away from dallas and there is a farm called 'mainstay farm' that is about 30 minutes or so from dallas. do you think that farm will take the business away from ours?

kain: lol. well, what about the other months of the year. Besides, i think PETA would be all over us. Not to mention all the people that shoot someone or cut each others arms off.

How rural? Is there a main highway close by? Are there any towns near? Any rivers?

Well anyway here's a few things that came to mind without knowing the specifics:

Antique auction house (small towns have loads of antiques tucked away and people are willing to go out of their way to find them and bid on them);

Is it a dry county? Private Club Dance Hall / live music;

Check the soil and see what unusual cash crop could be grown there, west texas maybe pistachios? Almonds? East Texas maybe some of the new fruits that the health conscious are into?

Also, be sure and check if the state has it listed in an economically depressed area, could be some state help on laying in electrical and water if the business would create jobs.

BTW, what county are you in?

STM

Edit to add: Lol, we posted at the same time, you answered about your location. I'll keep thinkin' on it. Also, I'm from Linden, Texas originally.

I love the one about chasing a turkey with a machete, I'm still laughing about it!
but seriously check out this link:
sanangelo.tamu.edu...

Sesame seed farm! it is what I would do if I had an extra 3,000 acres laying around. You can probably get government stipends and grants to start it with for machinery and such. Not to mention that there is probably tons of tax breaks....check it out. and if you do it I want to come see it!

Another thing to think about is leasing out your acreage to someone like this company:
www.syngenta.com...
they do genetic research on seeds to get them to portray certain characteristics. They also plant sugar cane and other bio mass plants for bio fuels, alternative fuels. I am sure there is plenty Government assistance to plant bio mass plants for alternative fuel use...
just thinking here....so many acres so many ideas....

First thing that comes to mind is a motocross complex. Design it all out, hire an excavation crue to move the dirt around. Build a few structures to support selling food, beer, etc. Build an restroom facility and stands and your done. Hire temporary help to fill the needs of an event.

Walla!

this is actually not a bad idea, she could even get licensed to sell mtocross gear and parts and such. I still like the sesame seed idea I posted above before they made me change my name.

paintball would be good yeah. or how about a firing range and she could get some large caliber weapons that people could rent for a half hr or more. like a 50 cal or maybe some full auto m-16, you know things that normal civilians can't normaly just go shoot.

I like Sth Hemisphere's idea of a holiday ranch. Let people put away the Ipods for a week, and do some good old fashioned manual labor. There are a lot of apple and pumpkin farms in Pa, which are all popular. I don't know how well they grow in Texas though. Probable be waiting a while for apple trees to grow though. Pumpkins, not so much.

Some of the places around here have hayrides where they drive you out to a pumpkin patch and pick your own.
A local apple farm lets you pick you own, they make apple cider, whcih you can watch, they also make their own candles. It's like a farm and a general store all in one.

What about like a hunting ranch. Texas has a lot of those I think. Breed your own deer, ( or whatever animal you wish) let people come, and kill a deer. A week long hunt, that would be cool.
Sorry if i'm rambling, sorta tired.

I don't have near as much land as you do in Texas, only 180 acres, but I grow cotton on it and it almost makes enough money to pay the taxes.

If you have plenty of irrigation grow sugar beets or alfalfa.

yall are coming up with some great ideas.

whaaa, we weren't really wanting to go the agricultural route and we want to make enough money to support several families... 6 to be exact. We were thinking that entertainment is the best route. I was really wanting to do a summer camp for kids and then maybe a bow hunting camp in the winter. My mom on the other hand wants to do a concert venue since our family is musically inclined.

I watch Little People, Big World and I love the Roloff Farm idea... pumpkin patch, etc... BUT mainstayfarm.com is closer to the city so I think people may go there instead since it is closer. I don't know. Please keep the ideas coming. Maybe some ideas that are out of the box...

It's sure nice to have a lot of space to work with.

I like the idea of a camp, but what about creating areas for people just getting away for the weekend in a tent or RV that could operate year round. A bunch of campsites near water should bring in some tourist dollars.

You could have an area set aside for people to store boats and RVs on a long term basis when not in use. City folks have big toys and not much space to keep them.

Donating some time and space for Scouts or Guides could be a good promotional tool that will help spread the word about the facilities you have.

I don't think you can take just one idea to make a go of it, but working a number of ideas that tie together in some way will make it more attractive to a larger number of people.

Good-luck....

Stock it with game and turn it into a guided hunting area, maybe some wild hogs or African animals.

Lot of rich people like to hunt those big wild boars.

If you have a water source grass sod is big money.

Cattle.

Once again if you have wells or a river nearby watermelons can make you a lot of money.

The OP is

Should we ask that the thread be closed? Or, should we continue with business ideas that might benefit other members with land on their hands?

Well, if you don't want to use your land in an agricultural context...

How about a nudist colony?

Camping, vollyball, nice large swimming pool, bingo,

Membership fees could be quite lucrative.

banned?

anyway I'm always open for new ideas of any kind. I vote, carry on.
