Williams 'ready to defy ID card law'

news.bbc.co.uk

Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Williams has said she would rather go to prison than carry an identity card. Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Any Questions, she described the plans as "a Big Brother scheme of the most terrifying kind". Baroness Williams said: "Because it is so expensive the government has proposed that it will sell our data to commercial interests who will then be able to track down every damn thing you do from dawn until dusk.

It's a breath of fresh air to see someone prominent actually blink and see all this for what it really is. The government sprouts words like 'protect,' 'fraud,' and 'terrorism,' but once you step back and take a look it really is 1984 creeping up on us, complete with distracting pink lacy frills.

Yea it really allows for that complete data collecting to lock down and control society.

National Id card? I'll pass on that one.

I also heard that after it goes on line, you can't fly on a plane without it. Just wait till you need it to get a job or buy anything anywhere.

Even discounting the argument about its effects on liberty (which is a massive factor), it is an economically stupid thing to do too.

£5.5billion. It's already gone up by £500,000,000 already this year, and we all know how cost effective government IT projects are. And then they have the nerve to make us pay for them. Ridiculous. (I realise I'm probably first against the wall now
)

The government should scrap this daft idea as quickly as possible, and funnel the money into something that really would 'make us more secure' - namely the armed forces, the police and the security/intelligence services (say, £3.5billion for the armed forces and £1billion each for the police and security services). There's absolutely no need to tag us all like animals; I have yet to come across a sensible argument in favour of them.

Finally a sensible politician. And another one Nick Clegg is also willing to do a civil disobedience campaign to fight the ID menace.
There were murmurs that Brown had decided against the ID cards last week, byt this was swiftly denied by the Government.
Pressure is building against this idea, thank goodness.
Many many people will resist the card in the UK-approximatley 50% of people I speak to locally say they will refuse-if half the whole country refuse-the idea will die a pathetic, expensive death.

One of our fine UK members out to send a thank you note to this feisty lady. And while you're at it, tell her about ATS. She would be a wonderful public figure for the November Revolution.

New york defied the Alien license for a while. But once bush came that changed the next day. We will see how long he holds up to btribes and threats of murder and blackmail.

That Real ID act is just a lowjack on human beings.

It's a spy camera, a data miner, a tracking unit, sure to be a government-controlled food and drug dispenser (indirectly), and a leash.

Excellent thread. I implore everyone to flag this!

If this ever comes to reality, they can have my UK citizenship returned.

Well hell can freeze over before I even think about getting an ID Card. Have more priorities right now, than spending some of my own hard earned cash on something so stupid.

Well I guess they'd better start building more prisons eh. For all of us who refuse to buy an id card.

Oh but betcha the queen will have her id card paid for by whom else us the taxpayers same with Brown....

I am from Eastern Europe - we have ID cards here from the 50s - it was a must for our military dictatorship . Did this increase the security? no way , it just created another layer of criminals specialized in creating ID cards. Sometimes even working with inside police to make it all legal in the gvt databases..

well, i'm all for buying an ID card,
even though i don't agree with the principle with the thing...

however- - if one doesn't acquiesce to having one
...that alone brands one as a 'person-of-interest'...
get a super ID, even if it is an optional thing right now...
because you will be ahead of the curve and possibly above suspicion
when national super-secure IDs are an option rather than mandatory
