I really never wanted to be a part of any kind of cult (but I try to keep an open mind), but I was just wondering if there's any reason to be concerned about or interested in any of the alien cults/religions. The ones I know of are Raelians, the Aetherius Society, and the Unarius Academy of Science. Thoughts? Condemnations? True believers out there?

IMO, there is no cult that is worth belonging too. Looking into yes, as many cults start out innocent enough and get out of control (heavens gate, jonesland, scientology...and pretty much all forms of religious worship) so it is best to keep a wary eye on them in case action needs to be taken to prevent them from hurting themselves and others.

However, if you feel the need to contribute to a cult, there is no shortage of organizations out there that will welcome you......and your checkbook.

Well I meant more with their theories, do they jive with any ufologist out there? Or are they the beliefs of a madman?

Btw, Scientology I would include with the three I mentioned. Because of its notoriety I always forget to put it in with them; but I think it's appropriate.

Most of them are exaggerated beliefs or beliefs derived from ignorance and/or delusion. A good/popular cult will be one that has enough "low fruit" dangling to reel you in. You know, the best lie is has a little truth to it. So they throw a little "truth" at you and before you know it your able to swallow their big lie.

You are much, much better of researching UFO's on your own than joining a cult. Maybe consider joining Mufon or something. Maybe go to some UFO related meetings or meet-ups in your city (every city has them) You will meet interesting, and very intelligent people. And it wont be nearly as out there and woo woo as you might think.

I think you will find that most of them have either some validity to their beliefs, at at least beliefs that might seem grounded in reality at first glance. I don't think that any Ufologist outright agrees with any of them. On the contrary, some probably incorporate some of the things Ufologist put out there in an effort to attract the fringe (and their pocket books)

Anyone who thinks aliens are gunna save them are madmen. Anyone who dresses like Rael and claims to be special because they contact aliens should be avoided, because they may have alien contact, but the alien contact could be lying, and god who knows what the end result of that would be? But mainly they are just whackos. I don't think anyone with even a dab of rationality located in their skulls would believe aliens are gunna save us if we join their religion and worship them as Gods. Even if this were happening in reality (which I believe it has in the past, and maybe discreetly through modern religions today), it would piss me off if an alien said that to me, because he's no God and I know it. Mainly I'd just avoid cults and religions altogether. Never buy into any of that as fact... and this is why I'm weary of modern science, too. We're basically saying that we know most there is to know about the universe (although actual scientists as individuals don't claim this, it seems to be the major unspoken consensus) so we must follow these very strict laws of physics that can never be changed because it's just the way it is..... that we have no control and are insignificat and that it is gunna save us..... that sounds like a religion to me.

"Cults" tend to have a center based in truth and then all around it are lies and hatred for those who don't believe as they do. Typically, most "cults" are "cults" of the personality. You usually have some guy, generally a guy that is considered an outcast by those outside of the "cult," who has complete control.

I just find the 'lunatic fringe' of UFO issues, the most interesting I think. Even though many of the claims are sketchy at best.

Many people might consider everyone on this forum to be a wacko! Ha, ha. That's the point I'm trying to make, I guess I kind of believe in taking just about everything seriously; and either debunk it, or find some truth in it.

Raoul Duke, I understand...

I recommend you see the movie Believers. It basically appraches the subject of "cults" from an angle of "What if one day, one of these groups turn out to be right?" It's an interesting movie.

Raoul, most people probably do consider me a bit "nuts" or "eccentric." It really doesn't bother me.

Oh I fully agree, once again that's the point I'm trying to make.

Well there are lunatics out there..... many seem to bew in power at the moment.... I think you have to be a bit crazy to think that you have the right to rule over others. I've read into some alien cults and tried seeing the light in them, but I just can't. You know how you can just sense the ingenuosity of some people? That's how I get about people who are cult leaders. Truth isn't that hard to find once you start looking for it yourself, even if it doesn't present itsself as official govt memos or photographs, there's still the feeling of truth... and that is absent from all alien cults I've heard of.

I just want to say I'm not attracted to the hierarchy of cults at all. My question is really about the information. Is anyone familiar with the beliefs of these groups, and how would you assess their views.

Some cults are fronts for govt. mind control experiments. Check the backgrounds of a lot of cult leaders/gurus and you will find that they have military or 3letter agency connections.
Heavens Gate comes to mind.

whaa,
Heaven's Gate was a front for a government mind control experiment? I wasn't aware of this.

Hi there,

studying and comparing the beliefs of cults used to be a hobby of mine.

But in retroscpect, I must admit theres a lot of trash out there. Especially the UFO-Cults.

Keep away from Scientology too (if anything, check out the scientology spin-offs which are cheaper and less cultish).

One problem with cults is that the INFORMATION often only comes from the ONE person leading the group. Thats why its necessarily limited, no matter how smart that leader is.

The only difference between a cult and a religion is how many people believe in it

You know DCP this is actually a pretty profound statement. I've been waiting to respond because I've been thinking about this. You should start a new thread based upon this premise, I think you've stumbled across something pretty darned interesting (and thought-provoking).

p.s. Maybe the only difference is that in a cult the information to be unquestioningly followed stems from one person, while in a religion many people are ordained to disseminate the same kind of useless information.
